archmcp
Does anyone know if there is a risk in using an installation CD from Dell used to install windows on a dell computer previously? I would like to forego buying another windows operating system if possible and no longer use the old computer (pc) with windows on it. thanks. I'm not very knowledgeable on this subject, but such "System CD-ROM"'s usually have drivers etc. for the specific hardware of the PC it comes with. So it would be fair to assume that a manufacturer's installation CD will attempt to install drivers for hardware that is not necessarily on your Mac or override any devices that might have been installed previously. I'd say you better not. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60417-previously-installed-operating-system/#findComment-435187 Share on other sites
matt_olsen
For me everything works perfect with a FujitsuSiemens CD with Windows XP Home SP2. Before I had Vista I used that and everything works great. I even used that CD on a Compaq PC and it works great. In my case the drivers are on a separate DVD, so the XP is pretty much clean, except it says it's a FujitsuSiemens PC in the System Properties dialog. hecker
It doesn't matter if unnecessary drivers are installed by the Dell CD. Windows will only use the ones required by your system. I say, go for it. hecker Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60417-previously-installed-operating-system/#findComment-437612 Share on other sites
lord_muad_dib
why don't download a normal windows disk and use your dell serial number? i guess dells do create a recover partition on the hd, i dunno if it conflicts with bootcamp structure Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60417-previously-installed-operating-system/#findComment-437624 Share on other sites
matt_olsen
As far as I know the partition is created at the factory, the installation CD can't create a partition on it's own Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60417-previously-installed-operating-system/#findComment-437832 Share on other sites
