bluedragon1971
25.49 is a horrible result! I've seen G3's with 256MB return better. You also should try a newer version of Xbench as well, 1.2 is pretty old. For comparison, my laptop listed in my sig gets around 75 to 85 on Xbench. edit: your disk access seems particularly bad. Dysan911
Not sure what the latest version of Xbench.. I did find 1.3 and it wasn't that much better. 29.02 was my score on that one. Your Laptop in your sig seems pretty stout though!. CoreDuo where as mine is an Intel Centrino 1.7ghz. The system seems pretty decent for what I'm doing with it. I was just curious how bad it was. your laptop must FLY though!. Whats killing my Numbers? heres the latest log. bluedragon1971
Well that score seems about right for as slow of a machine as you have, but your disk scores are really dragging your score down. It would probably be in the upper 30s or lower 40s if you could get that sorted out. I looked up your laptop, and if I'm right then you have the old Intel integrated video (earlier even than the GMA 900), which is no longer supported. Its probably just running on VESA. Those scores don't seem that bad, considering. By the way, the true test of Core Image is if you get the ripple effect when adding a widget to Dashboard. You probably don't, but unless you intend to do video or high end photo editing, you aren't missing much. You might still want to read through some of the driver threads around here to see what's wrong with your disk controller. That score should be MUCH higher. When I boot up there is a a Vesa 2.0 Message that refers to the 64meg Radeon Mobility 9600 video card thats in this old sucker. The HD is 5400RPM 40gig so I'd imagine its nothing to expect much out of. Not sure exactly what the Ripple effect looks like.. I can add a widget to the Dashboard but don't see any sort of Ripple.. I just tested to see if I could play a DVD and thats a Negatory. The DVD Player closes on an error as well as VLC which I downloaded and it opens a black box like it's going to play and same thing.. Closes and complains about it having an issue. Its kinda challenging and fun that I got this far with it. I orderded a Dell Compatible Wireless Card that I'm going to use in place of the built in Intel 2100/2200 card since that one doesn't support WEP/WPA. This will all likely lead to my purchasing a Real Mac down the road. I'm just evaluating more or less the MAC OSX Feel for everyday use.. So far I like it alot!. A big break from XP which I use and support everyday.. its Blah after so many years of the same ole.. Again appreciate your help! Brian. Dysan911
Hey BD.. I got QE&CI working.. I now know what you mean about the Ripple effect when adding Widgets. My DVD Playback works now too.. The only thing I have to figure out now is anytime I move a window with the mouse or scroll a window I get video corruption inside the window. Lovely!. but I think its progress.. Take it easy.. bluedragon1971
Good to hear that you got QE & CI working. Any progress on those hard drive speeds? Even with that older drive, you should still be getting much higher scores in that area. As I understand it, the video tearing is pretty common on some of the older ATI cards. Davejb
I was reading this thread yesterday and decided to bench my system, an Asus P4P800-E (865 chipset), P4 3.0 hyperthread, 2GB ram, 120GB 7200 rpm IDE hard drive, Nvidia 6800GT, and got a lowly score of 33.77 QE&CI is working with ripple effect, then I remembered I hadn't installed the IOATA driver because I was having other issues, so I installed it and holy {censored}! The machine booted 3 times as fast at least, was extremely responsive, and my xbench results jumped to 70.27, with a noticeable change obviously in the disk performance, so maybe look in that area for a fix. Dysan911
Well, I have an update too. My last xbench was uder uphuck's 10.4.9 DVD. I scrapped that and went with JAS 10.4.8. Got my video working with QE and CI. Still had the Window Garbage when scrolling, etc but that was fixed with Icursor and Mouse Locator. I reran the Xbench and hit 84+. I'm thinking that the JAS version of OSX just happened to default a little better for my I/O drivers I guess.
