weirdlookinguy
Note: This is my first time venturing into osx8, so I have no prior experience Yesterday, I got the OSX86_10.4.8_AMD_SSE3 install dvd and popped it in my HP Pavilion ze2113us laptop. Here are the specs: AMD Sempron 2600+ (Actual speed 1.8 Ghz) SSE3 Capable 60GB 4200 RPM Drive 512MB of RAM Integrated Radeon XPress 200M Graphics (use 128MB shared memory) 1024x768 screen I put in the AMD SSE3 DVD and after a few minutes, I was at the language screen. This is where my problems began. I clicked "next" and absolutely nothing happened. Pressed enter (on my external USB keyboard) and nothing happened. A few minutes later, after the DVD had spun up and down a few times, it went on to the next screen. The installer was so SLOW..... clicking things had lots of lag and it felt so incredibly unresponsive. I erased my entire disk and chose Basic Installation. 8 and a half hours later, it's barely at "Installing Xerox Drivers" and the Xerox installation advances by 1% every 2 or 3 minutes. It's agonizing watching, I left the computer on overnight in hopes that I would wake up to a clean OS X install but no dice. I've done some reading around and the install is supposed to take one hour, TOPS. So.... After the install is finished, will the system run as slow as the install did? Can I restart the install and type something at the Darwin boot screen that will let the computer run fast? Also, I chose basic installation. Was I supposed to customize it? Last but not least, I want to try it on my desktop PC, and HP with a Pentium 4 2.53 (Northwood) that is only SSE2 Capable. Can I do it with the DVD I already downloaded or do I need another image? The one I downloaded clearly said AMD SSE3 Thanks! --weirdlookinguy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/58802-holy-cow/ Share on other sites
weirdlookinguy
I decided screw it, and installed OSX86 on my desktop PC instead. Worked great with the "AMD SSE3" on my Pentium 4 SSE2. Anyway, I need help getting my PCI Realtek 8139 working. I understand I need to put "AppleRTL8139Ethernet.kext" into my extensions folder, but I don't have an install DVD for an older version of OS X to get the file off and I really don't feel like downloading another one. Can anyone send me the file or a link? It would be greatly appreciated, since OS X is very pretty but damn near useless without a working internet connection. x986123
first of all your hard drive is 4200rpm that not fast, mine is 7200 and i'm getting a raptor 10000rpm, second, you have little ram, you need atleast 1gb for it to go smoothly, third, your DVD drive might be out of date and have a slow speed. hope this helps. weirdlookinguy
Yeah, it's not a very fast system. Two things though, it's a laptop and I don't have the money for a laptop HDD and some ram right now. Second, even if it's a little slow that is no reason for it to take 9 hours and still not finish. Doesn't matter though, since I'm now using OS X on my desktop. Two things though: Please, please somebody help me with AppleRTL8139Ethernet.kext. I need the file and how to get it working, I know that simply dropping it in "Extensions" won't do the trick. Also, a minor detail: When booting, I don't get the fancy gray screen with the apple logo, I get a bunch of white letters saying what Darwin is doing. Can anyone help? benwinship
Yeah, no-one gets the boot up screen or the "dongggg" sound. Deal with it. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/58802-holy-cow/#findComment-419506 Share on other sites
Mega Man
That's what it's supposed to be? Is the boot up screen light grey with a darker grey apple logo? How come nobody gets that? I'm confused... Hmmm... Not even Vista lags that much with just 512 MB of ram... *shrug* Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/58802-holy-cow/#findComment-419527 Share on other sites
weirdlookinguy
Well, it's working great. Too bad about the apple screen, It's not a problem I was just wondering if it was possible to get it to work. I found the 8139 kext but it didn't work No worries though, the main reason I wanted OS X for was Garageband and iLife 06 should "be here" in about 18 hours, if you catch my drift. Slinger2g
The reason why you can't see the Apple logo screen is because someone edited the boot.plist file using the boot flag of -v. Go into your com.apple.boot.plist file and take out the -v flag. You will then boot up with the Apple logo screen... consolation
first of all your hard drive is 4200rpm that not fast, mine is 7200 and i'm getting a raptor 10000rpm, second, you have little ram, you need atleast 1gb for it to go smoothly, third, your DVD drive might be out of date and have a slow speed. hope this helps. That's rubbish, your system is not THAT slow, nor is there a DVD drive out there THAT slow. You should customise it with only the patches that you need, plus you can get rid of all the language localisations. However, sounds like your problem began before you started the install. I'm guessing your DVD drive is communicating through some Fckd up fall back mode as there is some incompatibility with the bus it's on or, some how speedstep (or whatever the amd equivalent is called) kicks in and drops the CPU speed -try disabling it in BIOS. On the upside, odds are it will run fine once installed, so if you have the time... P.S. if you need a kext from an older OS version, download the combo update for that version from apple's website then use Pacifist to extract the kext. I found the 8139 kext but it didn't work Did you delete the caches and fix permissions? Kext no worky if it's got wrong permissions and it's not in the old cache..... roxen
I found the 8139 kext but it didn't work There are maybe two of them (AppleRTL8139Ethernet.kext) one in /System/Library/Extensions/ and one in /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ Make sure that its an Intel or Universal version and not PowerPC only. (Get Info from the Finder) You can also try this one: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry378337 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/58802-holy-cow/#findComment-419981 Share on other sites
weirdlookinguy
Heck Yes!!!!! THANK YOU ROXEN!!!!!! Using the IONetworkingFamily.kext file you gave me the link to, I was able to get my ethernet working!!! I am typing this from Firefox in OSX right now! I replaced the IONetworking that was already there with the new one, did the permissions thing in Terminal, and erased the old cache, rebooted, opened Safari, crossed my fingers and.... tadaa!! It worked!! I also installed iLife '06. iMovie and iWeb don't work but Garageband does, and it's the main reason I wanted iLife, man this rocks. On a side note, I installed OSX86 for a friend. I modified the boot.plist file trying to get the right resolution set up, but I messed it up and it won't boot anymore. Is there any way to delete what I added so it'll boot again, or does he have to do a clean install again? royco
THe reason why it takes so long on an ATI X200M chipset is because the SB400 notrthbridge chipset drivers are not loaded by the dvd. I just gave up on mine after 3 install tries. You might want to try the newer releases by tubgirl and uphuck, I read somewhere that SB400 drivers are now loaded by the dvd during install. weirdlookinguy
Oh, that makes sense. I thought it was because the DVD drive was in some sort of PIO mode or something like that. Well anyway, so far so good but I can't find the kexts I need to get my graphics (Intel 845G) going, I have to type in the resolution every time I boot. It's been done before in earlier versions of OS X, but you need the kexts from the earlier versions. Suggestions anyone?
