Hello, here is my problem :

My osx harddrive is made so :

- OSX 10.4.1 partition (20 Go hfs+)

- Documents partition (60 Go hfs+)

I would like to install OSX10.4.3 and keep my 10.4.1 osx unchanged, so i have to do this :

- OSX 10.4.1 partition (20 Go hfs+) -> keep it unchanged

and split my 60 Go documents partition into :

- OSX 10.4.3 (20 Go hfs+)

- New documents (40 Go hfs+)

(I have backuped my docs before into another harddrive)

My question is : IF i boot with osx86 marklar dvd and use the disk utility,

if i don't touch the osx 10.4.1 partition by using the "protect for editing" option on it

and split my second part (60 Go) in two new parts, will disk utility destroy data on all my OSX harddrive

including the osx10.4.1 part or will it only destroy the partition i want to split ?

.... I prefer have goods informations before destroying my 10.4.1 OSX running !

THANKS !

Hello Domino,

I think it's not the same question, i think (perhaps i'm wrong) when you use F8 key at boot you can choose

the boot drive : dvd or harddrive for osx ... so why not a second os partition... and i've seen posts here

speaking about a way to restore an image from a osx part to another on the same HD, because the option

is not actually allowed from osx86 dvd.

but anyway, i'm not yet in this situation, and for this time, my problem is to keep my 10.4.1 alive...

I will decide after what to do if i can't boot into two OSX86 on the same HD, i could at least decide

onto witch OSX i want to boot. I think there is no problem installing OSX on two differents parts on the same

HD.

I post in the software forum about use of diskutility for this reason, but if i'm wrong, i will be happy

to know why.

Well, I'm hoping you can. But I have not seen anyone using 2 version of Tiger on the same drive. You can install 2 version of Tiger on different drives. You just have to disable one of the drive in order for Tiger install to not detect an older version. The way I see it, there is no point in pushing forward with the plan unless you know for sure you can install 2 versions of the same OS on a single drive. Theories doesn't count here. You are going to possibly risk loosing the the older install which you do not want to do.

One more thing to add. If you read Maxxuss' notes on the patched kernels for 10.4.3, it will silently alter files on disk and you can not change them back. Are you certain the patched kernel on 10.4.3 will not alter the 10.4.1 installation?

Ok, Domino, You'r surely right. Maybe it would be better to make an image of my 10.4.1 and if 10.4.3 won't work on my system, to restore my 10.4.1 from dmg ? (but not allowed with dvd install diskutility ?)

Or use the dvd install option : archive existing 10.4.1 and install 10.4.3 ? Is it possible ?

what do you think about ?

PS : my other HD is actually for win XP / Linux mandiva 2006 / and an 60 Go OSX archive part (in unix file system OSX format)

Thanks

I have no experience with archive/restore on OS X. I do remember someone posting about a disk util that will archive HFS+ and restore. You might want to see if Acronis will work. Can you hit the pawn shops and look for an old 20gig drive to test on? I don't have that luxury, but you might.
