phpguru
Hey everyone. I'm looking to create a low power desktop with full osx86 support (of course). I've been reading these forums heavily over the past few days and I wanted to ask a few questions. The Intel BOXDG965OTMKR is a new-ish board which hasn't been talked on this board besides a one line reference. I've looked through the wiki and I still have had no luck in finding more info. Mainly, I'm looking for a board with the following qualities: Low Power (usually means mATX) microATX Gigabit Lan Everything supported through out-of-box or hack SATA install supported SATA DVD supported This will be used with the following (got the parts from recommendations on the forum): 2GB Corsair Memory 4-4-4-12 NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT 256M (I don't play games but this will allow for full HD playback with low-ish power) 2x Samsung 500GB SATA HDD Samsung SH-S183L DVD Burner (SATA) Will the BOXDG965OTMKR work? Please open up your minds and lend your recommendations! I will try to keep you guys updated with the build after I buy the parts Edit: What processor do you guys think I should get? I want low power and good processor speed (so I can experience the mac at the fullest in case I do switch from windows). Prices just dropped so there are a lot of things within reach. phpguru Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/57822-designing-a-mac-for-low-power-server-use/ Share on other sites
EPDM
That board utilizes the following compononents that will NOT work without further patching Video: Intel GMA X3000 Audio Codec: SigmaTel STAC9271D LAN: Intel 82566DC Gigabit LAN controller For Video I suggest you pop-in an PCI-e model (as you are intended). However I find it strange that you associate NVidia 7600GT with low-power since ATI cards are known to draw less power than NVidia's. For audio you may try (but I doubt it'll work): the link below to Apple HDApatcher. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...amp;hl=Sigmatel I suggest you go for another board. The components that usually give the least problems ar below so try to find a board with these: Audio: CMI9880 (audio out works fine though there's no system volume control and no audio-in) Video: GMA900 but preferably GMA950 LAN: Realtek 91xx based (that's no gigalan but at least it'll work without too much hassle) These work out of the box without any patching. You might even ditch the NVidia GFX card (especially if you want to build a low-power desktop) as teh GMA950 uses QE and CI and is able to play DVD-movies just fine. I'm sure it's able to do a few HD resolutions just fine too since Apple uses this in their low-end 17" iMac. That usually means 945G mainboards.. but hey, you wanted "low-power" anyway. phpguru
I have no problem paying for a decently priced mac that fits my needs but I don't think I've found it yet. EPDM, from what I've seen NVIDIA has lower power consumption. Maybe the reviews for older videocards are hidden but I haven't found any that show the other way. I'll look into your suggestions, thanks! bump for more suggestions! phpguru Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/57822-designing-a-mac-for-low-power-server-use/#findComment-413398 Share on other sites
