I stopped watching less than one minute in. A 945GM3 with two RAM slots and integrated video isn't a Mac Pro, or even close.

No! It's better :P It doesn't use sucky, expensive FB-DIMMs, which use more power than a CPU but perform worse than normal DDR2!

(This message was written on a Mac Pro, incidentally. FB-DIMMs are the only thing I don't like about it. I'd give 'em up any day for two DDR2 slots, which I could still get 4GB of RAM into comfortably anyway - this machine's only got a gig in it at the moment, although it is the standard 2.66GHz config. I only use 2 DIMMs on my main 650i-based Windows rig anyway, since more DIMMs usually=higher latency and less overclockability...)

Edit: And before I get flamed, I do fully understand the benefits of FB-DIMMs over even ECC DDR2 in a server environment. However, putting 32GB of RAM in a machine is not my priority, and neither is having a 256-bit memory bus with peak bandwidth double that of the FSB :o

the video has been removed. i try to spend all this time to make something to help people and bring them to the OSX86 community, For free mind you ... i have no monetary gain here. And all i get is a bunch of bull {censored}... Rude comments etc. So there you have it you negative bastards. Were comparing a 300 dollar system to a 3000 dollar system (no {censored}) of corse there is going to be little things here and there. But the point here is you can have a 100% desktop class mac, the only thing to compare to is the Mac Pro simply because it is the only mac that doesn't have a {censored} mobile CPU in it. Also, 4 core's 8 core's Big deal... what i am making because of the fact that i am using standard DDR2 makes this machine a better workstation then the Mac Pro, Besides the mac pro is not a Workstation its a Server its a big load if hyped up (expensive){censored}.

I never suggested that you should remove the video, or that there was anything wrong with the video. The only issue I had was with the name. A better workstation than a Mac Pro? Do you know what a workstation is? It's a desktop computer with higher processing and (usually) graphics capability than a personal computer, designed to be used by one person. That's what the Mac Pro is. It uses what Intel calls a "server" board, and like any other desktop computer, it can be used as a server, but that's not what it's supposed to be (that's the XServe).

It's a desktop computer with higher processing...

Actually, it's a toss up. The Mac Pro (which in this case is the stock 2.66GHz, qud configuration) might have more processing power than my desktop (which is a Core 2 Duo clocked at 3.4GHz), but it's spread across four cores versus two with a much higher clock per core. Since most apps aren't very well multithreaded (and even quite a few workstation-grade apps are guilty of this), I expect that 9 times out of ten, the desktop would be well ahead, especially considering the fact that it has low latency DDR2 versus painfully high latency FB-DIMMs.

...(usually) graphics capability than a personal computer

You'd expect that, but since the only workstation grade graphics option Apple provide is the ridiculously expensive Quadro FX, and most models will be stock variants with the ludicrously poor (for a £1600 computer!) 7300GT as this one is, the 2900 XT in my desktop would leave it wanten in any app I can think of (though the Quadro does benefit from workstation-grade acceleration features, which can be had for very little money using a lower-grade Quadro/FireGL in any 'Joe {censored}' PC system, and really are only driver-activated features present in any modern GPU, full stop.)

Anyway, I don't regret having the Mac Pro - it was the only way to get an upgradable Mac, and it clearly has its purpose. I'm just saying that it's not necessarily better, even in workstation apps than a cheapo, 'off-the-shelf' PC like that described in this video (though maybe not quite that low-spec.)

  • 2 weeks later...
I see in the video a pci wireless card, it seems an airport ready card (i mean it use the embedded os x airport driver). I would like to know the exact model of that card. Naturally i intend buying a similar one...

thanks

You saw it, but did you have it muted? He said it didn't work in OS X :(
