For example, i have done plenty of upgrades from 10.4.9 to the current Leopard bulid with no ill effects. A slightly safer method can also be to do an Archive+Install, as then if things go cataclysmically wrong, you can always get back to your old installation. Still, it is always smart to do a backup, just in case.
