I am planning on buying one of the new dell vostro laptops, and am wondering if it could run os x well. The specs. i would like are:

1.8 Ghz. Core 2 duo

2GB Ram

160GB Hard Drive

8x dvd burner

256 MB Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT (Same as high-end macbook pro)

Dell Wireless 1390 netwok card

I am most worried about the santa rosa chipset not working and the graphics card not working.

I already know that sound and the wireless network card will work because they are in my current laptop.

Thanks!

the biggest question I have is , if booth cores going to work !!? since previous dell's did not,...

other than that , sleep mode,...

do expect it to install fine, since the P35 chipsets work,

another question would be sata performance, due 965 chipset,

last not least, the 8600M gt is a powerfull card,

but will the powermizer work ? is that hardware implemented or software,...

same for the cpus that the throttle will work,...

all these things add up,...

now the good part is,... it has the option for wsxga 1680x1050,

next thing, weather natit will have a driver for it,

for me also important, to be able to run external monitor,...

if not, the X3100 graphics sounds tempting,...

at that point might as well go for the 14,1" 1440x900 vostro,...

and don't forget the 9-cell battery,...

the new gateways should be on the way, they won't have the nvidia graphics,

but previous laptops did run on booth cores cpus=2 ,...

but lower screen res,... they do include hdcp output,... like the HP,...

and the gateway also don't look the wifi cards, like lenovo or hp,...

at this point even a 5570 acer, sounds good, and dump the left overs in a desktop,

would be a safe route,.... by christmas , there should be lots of santa rosa laptop choices,..

but who can wait ?

..."even a 5570 acer, sounds good"...

Beware that there are many different 5570 models and some of them - like mine - use newer chipsets for wireless and ethernet which are not supported currently with x86.

I really like the fit & value of the 5570 I have, but NONE of the known network tricks, extensions, kext, workarounds, ... have worked for me. Same for others on Acer notebooks with newer chipsets. Older ones work fine. (like probably the positive report & guide you saw for the 5570 from eskurza)

I am replacing the wifi card next week in order to get this thing online.

( And I'm crossing fingers that the Acer BIOS won't throw me a curve ball that I'm putting a different card in. )

I also would like to know if the 8600m gt 256mb will work in QE / CI and let all resolutions not only 1024x768 (4:33) , thus let a 16:10 notebook work (dell vostro 1500 in my case)

Everyone states 8000 series doesn't work, but they"re all talking about 384/512mb vram GC, like 8600 GTS etc , i'm talking about 8600m GT the same one as in the new macbookpro. Can a dell vostro run MacOsx ?

The big reason i want to stick with dell is that i know their wireless cards work with os x, and i need to be able to use wireless internet. (most laptops have the dreaded intel pro wireless)

Also, i was looking more at the gma x3100, and i was wondering what the os x support would be like, does anyone know about this?

Thanks

for what I know, the X3100 is running on a desktop and is a save bet,

thought about that too,... but figure, in this day of age it don't make sense to get at least a 8400m,

since it supose to use low power too,...

sombody installed 10.4.8 on the dell 1520 inspiron , what's the same as vostro 1500 with 8600m card,

did not get it to boot, with uphuck 1.3 no matter what ?

network, wireless, sound not working,...

and it does not have gigabit network,....

the other thing is, osx does not support the h.264 decoding, what the nvidia support,

as such, it will use the cpu ,... fan full blast, unless reboot in windoze,....

anybody knows, how much osx does on the gma950, x3100 series in graphics chip ?

apple did not state anything of implementing an osx upgrade to utilize the nvidia stream processors,...

maybe apereture will use it....

still don't know if booth cores work, asume it will, since its a new chipset, and new kernel, but don't know,

other thing, sleep and powermanagment is important for an laptop,...

one more the with intel x3100 is good enough to play hd avi in vlc, without a hitch,...

so the 1700 is tempting too

I got my Vostro 1500 today. For those wondering, I have the 8600M graphics card (same as the Macbook Pro).

I did manage to install OS X 10.4.8 onto my portable hard drive (same way I did it on my Dell Inspiron 6400). The probably I had, was that the first 4 times I tried to run OS X after it was installed, it told me to reboot, but I had the Apple logo in the background. Finally, on the 5th time, it booted and started right up. Everything looked GREAT! Comparing it to my Dell 6400, the resolution looked great, even though it said that it was only a 1024x768. This did not look that way at all. So now, I am going to spend some time trying to find the right files to make the QE work.

The other thing is that according to "About this Mac" both cores are working great and it wasn't choppy at all. I had this problem on the Inspiron 6400.

Lets see, what else. Oh, the 3945 wireless card of course didn't work, but I have the 1390 from Dell left over from my Inspiron 6400 which should work just fine. The other cool thing about the Vostro 1500 is that there is a panel on the back that looks just like the RAM panel and you can take out one screw and have access to the wireless card. No more have to take the keyboard off like in the 6400.

I haven't had too much time to play around with the OS X side of things yet, but I'll try to remember to write more if I figure anything out.

By the way, I did install Vista on in and have noticed HUGE differences. My Vista system rating went from a 3.7 to a 4.6. This is mainly because my graphics card on the Inspiron 6400 was a ATI X1400 and this 8600M is awesome.

Well worth it if you ask me. Plus, it looks heaps better in all black. And you have the option to turn on or off the wireless card with the flip of toggle. Nice.

Okay, nevermind, I'm giving up for now on the OS X side of things for my Vostro 1500. Everytime I boot into it, it takes about 5 times for it to actually boot into it. The first couple of times it always gives me the Apple error telling me to reboot my machine. Its not worth it to me at the moment.

I'll wait for Leopard to come out and someone to hackintosh it.

Have you tried NATIT for 8x00 ?? http://diabolik1605.com/DHF/index.html

DiaboliK's Helpful Files

Okay, so an update on where I stand with this Vostro 1500 and OS X:

I did reinstall in on a portable hard and it is now booting up fine each and every time (so far). I got it working by installing 10.4.8 from JaS and then I downloaded a 10.4.10 update from a torrent with Koolkal in the title.

Now, I do keep going back to the DiaboliK's page looking for the NATIT 8x00, but it has been removed at the moment because it wasn't working right for those who did install it on their systems. I am hoping that he will finish the driver soon, so until then, I am stuck with the graphics as they are.

Now, in other news, I still need to patch the audio, but I just haven't got around to it. Also, I had to remove my 3450 wireless card that came with it and install a Dell 1490 wireless card I got from eBay for like $10. There was a little bit of code editing I had to do, but I found it in this forum site. Internet works fine now.

I'll keep you guys posted
