InflatableMouse
I just got a mac pro with 4 x 2GB memory, a quad xeon 2,66. I am a heavy vmware user and I'm running a dozen vm's at a time. As a test, I configured a few of them with 2GB memory and ran continuous cpu and memory benchmarks in them. As expected the physical cpus are running at 100% almost continuously and the system temperature is rising, but only a little. Cpu cores are running between 53-55 degree celcius. I'm really impressed because my core2duo would idle at that temperature. Memory however is running hot between 78-82 degree celcius. System profiler can show ECC errors if they occur but I haven't seen them yet but I fear for them at those temps. This is certified Apple memory with the extra large heat spreaders. Chipset is running around 78 degrees ... also on the hot side. Are these numbers normal? I can open the case and these components are really hot to the touch and I'm not really comfortable with those. How are others doing? sarahbau
This page shows a Micon FBDIMM reaching 92°C at the AMB (which is where I'd guess the temperature is measured). This one says that up to 90°C is acceptable in commercial applications for DDR2 memory, but it shouldn't get damaged unless it gets to 110°C, which is pretty damn hot! InflatableMouse
Thx for the reply and the links. I was also trying to find out what Apple's recommendations are on this but haven't found it so far. I may give em a call see what that brings. Thx again. riws
100°C is for fbdimm not a problem, but its not good. apple says ~30°C with airflow is recommended for pm Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/56947-memory-temperature-getting-hot/#findComment-407227 Share on other sites
WiZMaC
I had the same issue until I got max_flow The installation was easy and those darn high temperatures are back to 45~50C Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/56947-memory-temperature-getting-hot/#findComment-407268 Share on other sites
OSXtasy
USE SMC Fancontrol, set minimum(all fans except Power supply, which wont keep that setting anyway) to 1200rpms, problem gone. Works great for me, and not too noisy. I have 5 gigs, and never over 45-60 celcius under heavy load (Running XP AND VISTA at same time in parallels and several other operations at the same time in OSX), and stays 40-50 idle/low load Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/56947-memory-temperature-getting-hot/#findComment-407390 Share on other sites
InflatableMouse
THx again. I found smcfancontrol yesterday and set the minimum fan for cpu and rear to 600, that's enough to keep memory around 70 degrees under load. Cpus are below 60 now, good enough for me. OSXtasy
I would actually run it (the fans) a little higher than that, and try to get the temps down around 60 or below. The reasoning is that although those temps are "within spec", it will without doubt still lead to hardware failing ALOT sooner than hardware kept as cool as possible. COOLER IS ALWAYS BETTER, and in addition, not many people realize that the intel cpu/chipsets will automatically underclock the processor if the cpu temps are deteted as too high. Then youre not running at FULL speed(cpu throttled back), and you may not even realize it. Therefore I say (and practice) keep the temps in the low 60's and lower if possible(I shoot for 45-60max) HTH, and good luck.
