Hi Guys,

I have my first hacintosh running nicely, but it is only a Pentium D/GMA950 system. I do plan on throwing in a 7300GT a little bit down the track but I don't think I would get the power I'm looking for with this system. So I am planning on using this a general tasks box and building a dedicated audio workstation.

What I want to know is, is if it is to early to invest in a new Gigabyte P35-DS3 board?

I am after something that I can overclock alot! And have all onboard equipment working.

From what I have read this board works out-of-the-box and you can patch sound for full IntelHDA. One of the main objectives is to find a board which I can have full 5.1 and optical sound.

So if anyone can tell what they think about this board I would be very interested to know.

Cheers.

I have the GA-P35-DS3R. The installer boots and works, but there are some glitches still. The south bridge is ICH9R, and there's no driver package for that yet. I'm also using a geforce8800 which isn't supported.

I just wish I could figure out why the INSTALLER recognizes all my {censored} and runs, but the OS that gets installed doesn't. I'd be happy with generic VGA capability and no sound at this point, but I'm gonna have to wait for the 10.4.10 update to try it again.

if you do a search of the forums, you'll find a success story using this motherboard. He has a different video card from me. That may very well be all that's holding me back.

No, I think it is not.

The P35 and G33 (same w/ graphics) have support for the next range of processors using the 45nm technique. The "older" 9xx chipsets do not.

The very best of the actual chipsets is the 975X. If you think that you are going to buy a new board along any of the upcoming cpus then take a mobo with this chipset.

The P35 is not mentioned to be the one deal for overclockers. It is meant for use in midrange desktop systems. The successor chipset P38 will be the replacement for the 975X.

When looking for P35 Mainboards you have to choose between boards using DDR2 and DDR3. Some tests by THG and others show that the higher clocked memory doesn't make more then 5-10% of speed improvement.

You should look around the web, there are several sites testing the new chipsets.

@macinjoshdotcom: As far as I know none of the new DirectX-10 graphic-cpus from ATI and NVIDIA ist supported at this time. The 8600, 8800, 8900 and ATI HD2400, HD2600 & HD2900 aren't working at the moment.
