So, up until now my bargain G4 (free from local tech college) has served me well for internet and the occasional Photoshop project (after uppping it to 1.25gb of ram and Tiger). But, I wanted to see what it is capable of. I decided to try and run Unreal Tournament 2004. Now, the minimum specs for this game include a 933mhz G4 or better proccessor with 32mb of vram. My G4 is a dual 500mhz with an ATI Rage6 card (32mb).

The game runs great. Granted, it would be better with a quicker processor, but for a computer that is running at just over half of the recommend speed for the game, it is great. I average around 25 frames per second and it doesn't lag at all.

I just wanted to share my experience. I love my Mac more and more by the day.

Yeah. The dual G4s always seemed to be more than the sum of their parts. My dual 450 ran WoW at 1280x720 at 30 fps (I only did it to test it. It wasn't what I played on)! It also played H.264 HD video without dropping frames, which is something my "faster" 1.42GHz G4 Mac Mini and 1.25GHz G4 PowerBook can't even come close to.

You want to squeeze some more life out of that G4, pick up a PC Radeon 9500, 9700, 9800 and flash it with a Mac video ROM and you'll get a CI/QE enabled video card and better OpenGL performance.

Recently I did this picking up a Radeon 9500 Pro on ebay for $30 and it was simple as pie to do.

(Same Dual G4 Gigabit system)
