Hi all,

I've got a Core2Quad with an Asus P5W DH Deluxe mainboard, 4Gb RAM 800, a Western Digital SATA 74Gb 10000rpm HDD, two Seagate SATA 320Gb 7200rpm HDDs, an ATI HD2900XT 512Mb graphic card, a LG DVD burner... And I don't like Windows.

What version of Tiger should I install? Will I have any problem with my configuration?

Thanks!

As you can see from my specs, Core2Quad works fine...all cores. I switched from an Asus board to the Intel Bad Axe2, but many here have had excellent results with your mb. 4gb of ram will zip through most things you want to do. I have to of the same drive as you on one of my windows systems and personally, although very fast, I also find them very noisy. But they will more than do the job. The 2900XT is a card I'm unfamiliar with, but since it has 512mb of vram, you'll at least need to flash its rom to get it to work properly in OSX. I'd go with a later installer like JaS 10.4.8 or uphuck's 10.4.9 v1.3. Part of the fun of all this is discovering what works and what doesn't and then working with others to solve the problem. It should only take about 13-15 minutes to install OSX on your system if you choose only one language an no extras other than drivers and kexts while experimenting. When you computer starts verifying the cd in the beginning, just hit skip as that can be a long process and for the most part is unnecessary. Good luck.

BTW, I still love all my windows machines...just enjoy trying something new once in awhile.

Hey! I'm writting this in Safari!! Everything went great. I installed the 10.4.6 version. I had it already burned and I wanted to test it. I'm also downloading the Uphuck version just in case.

List:

- Internet works, of course.

- Sound doesn't work. It's the internal sound from the Asus (Realtek). What can I do?

- Very important: the graphic card. For now I've got 16bit and 1024x768. If I can't fix it, I can't keep OSX installed. I need to work with graphics and video. How can I flash the rom?

That's all for now. It goes faaaaaast and it's beautiful!

By the way... It just asked me if I wanted to upgrade to 10.4.10. Is that ok?

Ok. Uphuck 1.2 installed and running. I've got sound!

I still don't have 1920x1200 resolution but I think I've got OpenGL, cause 1080p HD clips go really fast. Where can I see if I have QE, CI and OpenGL?

You can check this out in 'about this mac' > 'more info' > graphics card

It doesn't work. I did it and had to format and start over again. It doesn't matter. Yesterday I tried so many different things for the graphics card that I ended up installing 10.4.9 like 5 or 6 times.

Well... I've got almost everything working but I really need the resolution (1920x1200) and QE/CI enabled. How can I do it? BJMoose said it was a matter of flashing the rom. Is it too difficult? Is there a "step-by-step" tutorial?

Thanks.

since you already have a really nice/expensive video card, if you'd like to run OSX with full 3d support (quartz extreme/etc and not do any gaming), get a nvidia 7300 and put it in your other PCIe slot. you can get that card new for under $70 or even used for $30. make sure it has 256M or less.

so is someone gonna answer him whether its ok to update to4.10? I think its really not good, but please tell him before he screws up his nice setup!

This is a very helpful forum as it was for me when I was starting. Usually, if someone doesn't get an answer right away it's because no one that happens to be online at the time knows the answer. Actually, he found out for himself before I could answer. And it's not the end of the world if you have to re-install osx. Only takes about 15 minutes and if you're like me, you learn a lot more from making some mistakes here and there than you do from having your hand held every step of the way.

I really know what you mean i simply heard horror stories of ppl trying to update, as far i know, Its not possible.

I just wanted to save him the work thats all.

And yes this forum is very helpful! I never questioned that :P I am still a n00b but want to build a similiar system (quad core). But there are so many boards etc. and combos, that its not easy having ONE guide. BTW, whats the name of the backplane you got? I am looking for one where you can leave some HDs off etc. :) sorry if OT.

Please don't confuse the boy. The only 512 MB cards that have problems are the Nvidia ones. ATI cards works just OK with either 128, 256 or 512 MB, you DON'T NEED to flash it, the 512 MB cards that work after being flashed are Nvidia ones. Your problem Ooze3d, is due to one reason: since your card model is quite recent and Apple don't use that family of cards (yet) there is no driver support for it. You'll have to wait for Apple to use these cards in at least one of their computers, then they'll add proper support to the current ATI drivers.
