I made some free space with Partition Magic, made it an unformatted partition, booted into Linux, then set the partition type to AF. Now, it says that OS X can't be installed to this partition when trying to install (10.4.1)

I'm sure I made it a primrary partition. What am I missing?

This is an older screen-shot, It's type is now AF

Thanks in advance, Scott

I'm not pretty sure, but i've listened several persons having troubles installing osx86 in slave HD, so i'd recommend try it in the master HD, is that isn't possible move some data from master into slave, in order to free some space. Also i've listened some persons having troubles installing in far away partitons, you have placed your AF partition after of 176.4 GB, i think that is too far, you could to try to put after of 80 or 95 GB, not so far away, recently i helped to a member with this same trouble, he fixed it placing his AF partition nearest. Look at this image, this show my Master HD's state (partitions order).

So it might not like the extended drives there. Well, I can't give them up. I'm trying to move my windows partition as the second one now. It's kind of taking a while though (moving a 95GB partition accross 10GB) so it's only at 10%. After I re-create a partition, then fix Grub I'll let you know how I got on (God I hope I don't screw things up)

Have I made no progress?

So, I have now set up my system like this

http://hyphenex.ugtech.net/im3.jpg

But it will won't let me install, it tells me "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. Mac OS X cannot start up from this volume."

I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but in my pre-existing Linux distro, the Mac partition shows up as /dev/hda4 and diskOs3 inside the Disk manager on the Mac OS X install DVD.

I'm not willing to give up just yet but don't want to remove everything to start again. If I were to start again, how would I go about making a compleate format of my systems hard disk and removing everything and all the partition tables and EVERYTHING.

Is I have it working on a 10GB partition on VMware, is it possible to mount the VMware image I have working, then in linux then copy the partition over to my real hard drive, then configure Grub to boot the pre-installed copy? Or would this cause all kinds of Hardware problems being ran on a different environment then it was installed on?

From hence forth, I have no idea what I'm doing so you'll have to give me links and run through step by step if I'm not to lost.

Thanking you for your input in advance, Your kind grovler, Scott

You really want osx86 on disk0s1. If you want to format the HD and set up new partitions,i suggest booting from the osx disc and choosing "disc utility' from the utilities.

but if you want to keep these partitions, try using the osx disc utility and erase that partition then try to install on the free space. you may need to specify "rd=disc0s3" after installation though.

The OSX install may not like the 4 Primary partitions. It may still be possible to install to a separate HD. Make sure everything runs, then copy that partition as an image back to your original HD in question and see if that boots. Just because the OSX installation chokes doesn't mean it won't boot properly after you re-imaged it. Acronis True Image will copy and save type AF partitions, but not resize it (so make sure the size can fit on the original HD).

So now I need a second hard drive or an externel one? Is it not possible to mount my VMware image and copy that one over using DD in linux or something? I've no idea what I'm doing with that, but I do have a fully functioning Linux system, could that help?

I recommend you that install over Master HD, is so easy, less troubles, i did it so, really easy, but is your pc and your time, so you'll decide it. Good luck.

I don't like the idea of wiping my hard drive (to much work, to much data)

If I've got Linux running under VMware, is it possible to use that to move or copy my Mac partition over from the second virtual hard disk, over to my physcial one?

I don't know, i never have used VMWare. I'm not recommending you to erase your HD, only to install in the Master HD, i did install there without to erase nothing.

Okay. I could not get it to install. Mac could still not Install on that partition *face grows red*

So, as I got it working in VMware, I installed in VMware, then dd'd the partition over to the physical one. Set up grub and now I get the HFS+ partition error while booting.

In BSD/Linux for some reason it is still showing up as /dev/hda4 or Disk0os4 (or however BDS does it)

Do I need to re-order things in my Partition table or something? I'm once again lost

Remember, i told you that you must to place your AF partition not so far like you have it now, this could be the reason of your trouble. About of VMWare i can't help you, you need someone else.

My Type AF partition is at the verry front of my drive. Look at http://hyphenex.ugtech.net/im3.jpg (as posted earlier)

Ok, it's a good place. Are you using tiger-x86.tar.bz2 or DVD, or maybe you only have tried with VMWare ?.

Well, I got the 'Could not install on this drive, could not boot from this drive' message when trying to install from the install DVD, so I installed it in a hard disk in VMware then dd'd the image over from the virtual machine to the real thing. Now I get 'HFS+ partition error' while trying to boot with grub, Although I just plopped in the install DVD hit F8 then tried 'mach_kernel rd=disk0s4' and it booted perfectly, Is this a Grub issue or do I now need to put that mach_kernel bit somewhere somehow in Grub??? Gosh, this is getting frustrating.

The erros that you got before, not necessarily have to be got now, remember, before you had your AF partition in a bad place. I'd try to install again with DVD, but i'd format that AF partition with Disk Utility of DVD.

Already tried. This time I put the chain0 file in the windows bootloader, everything was working sweet, now my mouse and keyboard don't work. Has it crashed as soon as it boots, or is the mouse and keyboard just not working???

Well, i can't to help with chain0, because i haven't tried it. I'm telling you try with Darwin Bootloader. What kind of keyboard and mouse you have (USB or PS2) ?.

Chain0 is booting the darwin bootloader perfectly. I am using a USB keyboard and USB mouse. Although I've read something about them dying and only working again if I disable PS2 emulation/support in my Bios. If I disable it though, I can't select MAC OS as my boot system in the bootloader.

You should try a PS2 mouse and KB, you can to buy an adapter, are very cheap. Mouse and KB USB are very conflicting.
