Apple releases iPod

Cast your mind back to 2001 and remember the launch of the iPod...

For those of you that don't, here is a little reminder.

 

For a mere computer company, I guess the launch of such a new, and strange product would have seemed stupid, if not suicidal. The Apple community had some interesting thoughts on the iPod, as this Mac Rumors article from 2001 shows.

 

Great just what the world needs, another freaking MP3 player. Go Steve! Where's the Newton?!

I still can't believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!

Why oh why would they do this?! It's so wrong! It's so stupid

 

So the Apple community generally wasn't keen.

Slashdot wasn't keen either. Here was an article they wrote shortly after the release.

 

So it seems the iPod was doomed and was going to take Apple with it.

 

The rest, as they say, is history.

I can't believe Apple! All this hype for something so stupid! Who cares about a mobile? The world doesn't need another mobile phone! Give us something new! Think differently! Why oh why would they design something like this? It's so wrong and ridiculous!

The 1G iPod wasn't really a success though, and I think it took the Mini to become successful which is far below the $400 price-point many were complaining about.

 

Still, it was a very interesting read .
