Jimbolaia Jones
When I read about Quartz Extreme I learned it was like Compiz inlinux, but what is it really, and is it effects like that in Mac really?
sarahbau
I don't know what Compiz is, but Quartz Extreme is used for drawing much of the Aqua interface in OS X. Instead of using the CPU, it uses OpenGL calls to the GPU. This makes it so something like moving a window on the screen won't slow down any tasks that are running. Without Quartz Extreme running (which needs Core Image), your CPU has to handle everything, which makes it quite slow.

QE is independent of CI, you don't need CI to have QE - pretty much the only requirement is an apple supported card. As I recall the ancient 16MB rage in my old TiBook supported QE.
