Hey guys, just switched from a PC and I am looking for a bunch of applications (both free and and not) that I should get. I don't have anything except what comes with the OS right now, and I'm looking to stack up... can you recommend both free downloadable apps and store bought stuff that I should look into? What do you use?

IE...

- Word Processing, etc.

- CD/DVD Burning

- Browser

- Newsgroup software

- Map software

- Games

Anything at all that I might be interested in, from cool "little" stuff to bigger stuff.

Thanks!

Toast is a brilliant CD and DVD burning package, azureus is also still available on MAC as a UB but i prefer transmission as its so small for dealing with torrents. Microsoft Office for mac is available but at the moment it has to be run under rosetta so its a bit slow at times and of course you need sse3 to get it to run at a bareable speed.

Logic is an excellent audio editing package, and Final cut pro also an excellent video editing package, hope this is of help.... the list could go on forever, these are just the programmes i use every day.

(oh and also parallels, so i can run xp in the background and use any nessecary programmes i need that i cant find a replacement for or dont want to replace.)

Shiira - Best Safari replacement. Built with Apple's "cocoa" code-writing, so it renders pages as Safari would. Adds more features such as Expose for tabs within browsing. This is good if you need multiple browsers open and logged into the same sites with different accounts.

Parallels - Run Windows XP within a window, or full-screen. I use it in conjunction with Desktop Manager, to make one of my virtual desktops a full-screen session of Windows XP.

The best application that I can recommend is Quicksilver. I wondered how I could live life without it.

There are many tutorials online on how to use it, and I highly recommend doing that.

Thanks guys, great stuff.

I am wondering now: is there an app that is basically a Windows Explorer for Mac? I tried Forklift, but it isn't quite what I was looking for. Finder is ok, but the way Windows Explorer is laid out is just great for file management... and I am used to it.

Any other file managers out there, something that works like Windows Explorer File Manager (not the web browser)?

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions so far!

Here's what I use, in the same order presented above:

Microsoft Word, AppleWorks, Jer's Novel Writer Beta

iDVD, iTunes, Toast

Safari, Opera (DON'T USE FIREFOX)

Microsoft Entourage

I use the map websites or Google Earth

PacTheMan X, Mine Swept, some free solitaire game, World of Warcraft. Anything else, I'm using my XBox 360.
