No you don't. You can get dual boot working in many ways. Darwin and Chain0 are two popular and easy ones.

 

If you install XP first and then later install OS X then your OS X installation will be your active partition. This then will mean darwin will be your bootloader and it will normaly give you the correct options of entering OS X or XP.

If you install OS X first and then later install XP then your XP installation will be your active partition. This then will mean windows will be your bootloader but you will need to apply the chain0 method (as it doesn't do it automatically).

 

You can also change your active partitions to change which bootloader you're using. For most people darwin is probabily the one they use as they install OS X second (like me) and that's just fine. But the chain0 does have it's advantages, such as being able to have XP set as the default selection when your bootloader loads.
