jordanvanbergen
I'm unable to login to my windows shares. I can see my computer name in "WORKGROUP" and if I try to connect I will get a message to fix my alias but it doesn't do the trick. In 10.4.1 I was able to connect to my pc without problems, in 10.4.3 I can't. I will always get this FIX Alias thing. Anyone suggestion or idea on how to fix this? macgirl
Did you try with the IP directly, like smb://10.0.0.12/my_share ? jordanvanbergen
Did you try with the IP directly, like smb://10.0.0.12/my_share ? Yeah I did and strangely it doesn't work, I have tried everything: smb://ipaddress/sharename smb://user:password@ipaddress/sharename smb://domain:user:password@ipaddress/sharename * No firewall is running on my windowsXP machine * I'm able to ping my windowsXP machine * I was able to connect using Finder in 10.4.1 without any problems Some other ideas to test? Or are there other tools/utils for Mac OSX that make a connection to a windows share for you? jordanvanbergen
I read somewhere that you'll have to delete your keychain and with some luck everything will work again. But HOW do you delete a keychain? aha /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Acces You are able to delete a keycahin here...... and does the connecting to my network work again... let's try.... NO, so this is not the solution. Still my windows XP shares are not accesible for me... Regards Jordan Did you try with the IP directly, like smb://10.0.0.12/my_share ? I did, I found that I can connect using the terminal and the following: smbclient //server/drive -W workgroup -U username. So I have a connection this way. But It won't show in finder or whatever. Any ideas if I have a connection using the smbclient on how to see it on the desktop or in Disk Order? semag
Hi, I managed to install 10.4.3 on an Acer Travelmate 803 (for a couple of hours now). The strange thing is that, when I try to access any windows share (domain server w2k3, smb, host), the minute I press the connect button, I get the well known (from installation) grey screen that says "You have to press and hold the power button bla bla bla" and the pc is dead ! Sometimes, 5 out of 10, I get to press the button without a crash and then I get the Fix Alias message that doesn't give me any clue. This installation is natively installed from 10.4.3 8f1099 dtk DVD, patched 1.1a. The previous installation was a deadmoo 10.4.1 and It worked fine with any windows share. If anybody have an idea ... htilly
Hi! Having the same problem. Im unable to connect to my smb share (Samba 3.01311 on SuSe 9.3). Works liek a charm from my "real" macmini 10.4.3, but osx86 10.4.3 (11a) just hangs if I try to connect to a smb share from the finder. Only way to access the smb is from the prompt using: smbclient -L //server -U user/WORKGROUP Is there anyway to mount a smb share in osx86 10.4.3 ?! Thanks in advance! CthulhuOSX
Ok, I've had the same problem, error -36. This is where I found a solution, hope it helps others too. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301580 "Mac OS X 10.4: Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Samba or Windows server After upgrading from Mac OS X 10.3.x to Mac OS X 10.4, you may get an error message when you try to connect to a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server. A Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server includes servers operating on Microsoft Windows and other operating systems that use Samba for SMB/CIFS services. If the connection is unsuccessful, the following error message may appear: The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in smb://........ could not be read or written. (Error code -36). If you check the Console (/Applications/Utilities/), you will also see this error message: mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed This error can occur if your Mac OS X 10.4 client is trying to connect to a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server that only supports plain text passwords. If you do not see the above message in the Console, you are not experiencing this issue and should try normal troubleshooting to isolate the source of the issue. Unlike Mac OS X 10.3, the Mac OS X 10.4 SMB/CIFS client by default only supports encrypted passwords. Most modern Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers use encrypted passwords by default, while some Samba servers might have to be reconfigured. You should consider contacting the owner or system administrator of the Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server to which you are trying to connect and encourage them to disable plain text passwords and start using encrypted ones. If the server cannot be reconfigured to support encrypted passwords, you can configure Mac OS X 10.4 SMB/CIFS client to send plain text passwords. Warning: If you configure your computer to allow connections to Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers using plain text passwords, when you attempt to make any connection to such a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server, your password will be sent "in the clear". This means that it is possible for someone who is monitoring your connection to see your password. This could lead to someone compromising the Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server. We strongly recommend that you configure your Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers to exclusively use encrypted passwords. Follow the steps below to configure your computer to use plain text passwords to make SMB/CIFS connections when the specified Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server does not support encrypted passwords. (You must be an administrator to do these steps.) Make sure that you are not currently connected to any Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers and that you do not have any Samba or Windows-related error messages open. Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/). At the prompt, type: sudo pico /etc/nsmb.conf Press Return. Enter your password when prompted, then press Return again. You should see an empty file and a "New File" notice at the bottom of the pico window. If you do not see the "New File" notice, this file already exists. Enter the following into the file so that it appears as follows: [default] minauth=none Save the file (press Control-O), press Return, then exit pico (Control-X). Type: sudo chmod a+r /etc/nsmb.conf Press Return. Restart your computer." Cheers. linear
I had the same problem trying to connect to my windows server. I reinstalled a couple of times and tried everything I could think of. Sometimes I got '"Alias Not Found" errors, and sometimes I got "Data could not be read/written, ERROR -36" (i think this is when I entered the IP address, IE smb://192.168.0.70/mp3).. I was able to connect with the smbclient no problem, but this was an unacceptable solution. After a little dirt digging on this wonderful forum I found the recommendation to change the username. Now this is a little strange because I did mention that I installed osx86 mutiple times. The first time I deleted the username from my windows server, so during the next installation that username no longer existed on my windows 2000 server. But creating a new account after installation and autologging in with this new account fixed my problems and I am one happy camper, :happymac:with 8F1111A on a ASRock915, 3GHz Prescott. (this is way better then my old mac classic) I also read that shortening the computer name may help (Ie Linear's Computer -> linear), but this was unnessary for me. Although the Long username also was a single word.. (but my computer name is still Linear's Computer) Summary-> I made a new account Long Username was one word with no spaces Short Username was one word with no spaces (duh!) I set this new account to auto login the next time I restarted.... Hope that helps anyone in a similiar problem. jackt283
I'm getting the "the alias "servername" cannot be opened because the original item cannot be found" message anytime I try to connect to a windows computer through the network folder. I can however connect fine through the terminal using: smb://192.168.0.4/SharedDocs -W workgroup without entering a password or anything. I would be great to re open this issue and see if anyone has a solution. I've tried a few things, to no avail. williamgeo
Today I found a interesting bug in Windows Lan Manager Server service. We had renamed a server running Windows 2000 Server and created a DNS (CNAME) alias record for it because we wanted to be able to access the server both the new name and the old name. The new name works as it should but when we tried to access the server with its old name we wasn’t able to access. ========== george Stock Market Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/4921-unable-to-login-to-my-windows-share-fix-alias/#findComment-1079733 Share on other sites
