I installed osx on my work e520 computer. It worked, but no sound or network. Everything else seemed to work just fine. Remember thoug that there was something you should think of to get around the waiting for oot device thingy.

A tip, search the forum. If any of you get it working, you could maybe post the results here?

cheers!

you guys need to change the drive operation setting from raid to auto/sata in your bios by hitting F2 after poweron

and you wont wait for device anymore on the e520

Actually, that is bad advice.

E520 works nicely in raid mode.

In Tiger, Macdotnub and Kalyway boot out of the box.

In Leopard, I understand Kalyway boots oob, but not others. I have not tried this personally.

I posted how to patch Leopard to enable ICH8R here:

And so they do. And after install, it doesn't work to boot off of the partition you installed to. At least for me.

Well, I've been able to boot every one of those distribs from the partition I installed to.

Are you using pc_efi?

Before pc_efi, the only way I could get installed partitions to boot was to install onto 2nd HDD, then use BIOS to boot off 2nd HDD.

pc_efi has made it easy. You install boot_v8 onto your Linux partition into /boot

Then add item to grub boot menu:

title Mac OSX Leopard

root (hd?,?) (replace with same values grub uses for Linux partition, not ones for OSX partition)

kernel /boot/boot_v8

boot

I am certain other people use other bootloaders. So if you don't want to use grub, then you can research more.

Now there are issues with some installs. For instance, in Kalyway 10.4.10, if you install the so called "kool patch" for Dell E520, you won't be able to boot your installed partition. I think it was for people who changed the BIOS setting.

Macdotnub was easiest install. Be sure you install both SATA patch and ICH8R patch.

E520 is actually a very nice platform for Leopard. Sound works with Taruga's kext for Tiger, his Leopard patcher doesn't work for us yet. Onboard ethernet doesn't work, but I use a Linksys100tx pci card with tulip.kext.

thats not bad advice .. you set yours to raid on , but admitted to not even setting your drives up as raid in the raid bios , so whats the point?

so it will load the {censored} ahci loader and never use it?

just to say you have raid?

the e520 will boot and work with way less problems by using auto/sata , theres no point in enabling raid with one hard drive.. its meant for 2 or more disks not one hdd and one dvd, thats not a raid .

so until you set up 2 drives , then setup raid0 (striped) and optimize it for performance , then you can come back and tell me I gave bad advice .. until then zip it. Your just going by what Dell has plastered in the bios screen and because it comes shipped like that , and in a junk windows environment maybe thats a great solution but we're not ..

ps. nicely isn't a word.
