Slayte
I successfully installed Mac OS X 10.4.8 on my XPS M1210 yesterday. Everything works on it except for the sleep function, the screensaver, the camera, and two finger scrolling. So overall I am pleased, but there is one thing that is bothering me quite abit that is the keyboard. Naturally, it is a Windows keyboard with the windows key. Is there any way of making the windows key the command key? Also does the tab key do anything in OS X? Furthermore the ctrl + alt keys that I use in windows dont seem to work in OS X. Can somebody let me know what I should do in regards to the keyboard? kramer2k
System prefs >> Keyboard & Mouse >> Keyboard >> look for "Modifier Keys" @ bottom K Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/48095-windows-keyboard-and-the-windows-key/#findComment-344413 Share on other sites
emig647
Yah the modifier keys should work fine for you. I'm stoked that I don't have to worry about start up keys on a hackintosh . It annoyed me that I had to use the wrong key on a pc keyboard on a real mac during start up. Slayte
It doesnt allow me to use the windows key or the alt key there....I can merely change the command key to ctrl, but that means I cant use ctrl...? Suggestions? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/48095-windows-keyboard-and-the-windows-key/#findComment-344433 Share on other sites
emig647
Think of the alt key as the option key and the windows key as the command key. Swap their places and you should be good to go. Slayte
Right I see. I guess Ill need a picture of a mac keyboard then lol. Is there no way of using the keyboard I have? I gotta look at a picture of a Mac keyboard and find all the characters there, and press them on my windows keyboard accordingly? emig647
If you go to System Prefs, International, click input menu, check keyboard view, check show input menu in menu bar... and go to the flag at the top and choose show keyboard viewer... You will get a keyboard preview of your kb... type on it to see the keys pressed. Hope this helps. emig647
No problem! I can't stand the command key being in the middle. It's harder to hit. It either HAS to be control, or the key next to the space bar. Enjoy! ciper
Changing the key mappings in System Prefs is {censored}. Try opening a terminal and you will see the key changes arent following the OS changes. emig647
You're saying if you open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal the keys aren't swapped? I'm not seeing that. I swapped control and command and now I can type ping google.com, and use cmd-c (kill current process, normally ctrl-c) and it kills it. So not exactly sure what you're talking about. Works fantastic for me. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/48095-windows-keyboard-and-the-windows-key/#findComment-345073 Share on other sites
SA22C
I decided to go a step further and bought myself an Apple keyboard. Now I don' t have to worry about weird keymappings.
