chris3g
haha don't worry i'll still be around. if you are using 2 seperate drives, you don't have to use easyBCD. What you are basically doing is installing each OS on it's own drive, like it is going to be the only OS on the system, and then using the p5w-dh's f8 feature to simply select which drive you want to boot from. if you are using a single drive, or if you are using multiple drives but want to set up your partitions differently, then you will have to use easybcd or some other multi-boot setup. i haven't gotten to this yet, but i will install ntfs-3g so osx can read/write to the ntfs partition, and macdrive so vista can read/write to the HFS+ partition. that way sharing data between the two OS's will be easy. emig647
OH the f8 feature is a feature of the motherboard? i was wondering how that worked. I figured it was something OSx86 installed. So I should get another harddrive for windows.... hrm.... maybe I should have bought 2 250 gigs instead of one 400 gig. I'll see how it goes. Thanks again Chris! That makes life so easy. MacDrive 7 is cheeep. Cheat with Vista and install it on a Fat32 partition that way it is read/write in OS X. chris3g
little bit of weirdness - after installing vista, and then reconnecting my os x drive, os x failed to boot giving "still waiting for root device". I changed the SATA setting in the bios from AHCI to Standard-IDE and now it is booting normally again (and vista too). although i'm not sure what caused it to stop working under AHCI. here's my x-bench results ( cpu @ 3ghz) Results 165.19 System Info Xbench Version 1.3 System Version 10.4.9 (8P2137) Physical RAM 2048 MB Model ADP2,1 Drive Type ST3320620AS CPU Test 154.71 GCD Loop 353.71 18.64 Mops/sec Floating Point Basic 170.38 4.05 Gflop/sec vecLib FFT 122.80 4.05 Gflop/sec Floating Point Library 110.93 19.32 Mops/sec Thread Test 298.08 Computation 275.82 5.59 Mops/sec, 4 threads Lock Contention 324.23 13.95 Mlocks/sec, 4 threads Memory Test 194.46 System 204.14 Allocate 176.18 646.98 Kalloc/sec Fill 208.54 10139.52 MB/sec Copy 236.72 4889.46 MB/sec Stream 185.65 Copy 179.05 3698.17 MB/sec Scale 185.17 3825.50 MB/sec Add 189.78 4042.78 MB/sec Triad 189.01 4043.43 MB/sec Quartz Graphics Test 205.59 Line 187.13 12.46 Klines/sec [50% alpha] Rectangle 240.10 71.68 Krects/sec [50% alpha] Circle 229.20 18.68 Kcircles/sec [50% alpha] Bezier 206.92 5.22 Kbeziers/sec [50% alpha] Text 178.08 11.14 Kchars/sec OpenGL Graphics Test 250.09 Spinning Squares 250.09 317.25 frames/sec User Interface Test 578.90 Elements 578.90 2.66 Krefresh/sec Disk Test 59.44 Sequential 91.67 Uncached Write 143.28 87.97 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 140.65 79.58 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 43.51 12.73 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 152.47 76.63 MB/sec [256K blocks] Random 43.97 Uncached Write 15.84 1.68 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 95.15 30.46 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 93.86 0.67 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 150.02 27.84 MB/sec [256K blocks] Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/47496-hardware-list-for-new-osx86-pc/page/2/#findComment-344443 Share on other sites

chris3g
it's pretty quiet. i have 2 case fans running at low, 1 case fan at medium, and the zalman cooler at full speed. It would be even quieter if i turned that down, but it's not as loud as my old setup as it is (MDD G4 Powermac + P4 Windows Box) and i'm so used to having some noise in the room that i really don't think i want it any quieter. chris3g
one thing i cannot get working is my AlchemyTV DVR PCI card from my old G4 Powermac. I figured this would work, since it is a mac product and is supposed to work with intel mac pro's, but it's not recognized for some reason. Vista recognizes it as a "multimedia device" so it's not a hardware or installation issue. I searched the forum and found one post also reporting that the card is not recognized, so i guess this one isn't going to happen. jl8080
Nice setup mate, mine will be very similar come June when I'm back home from uni. I will be opting for an nVidia graphics card though since I got a laptop with an ATI card (X1600) and never been so dissappointed. What keyboard and mouse will you be using with it? I find the Apple ones a bit tacky Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/47496-hardware-list-for-new-osx86-pc/page/2/#findComment-344693 Share on other sites

emig647
I would have cried if I didn't get that one to work. I'm so excited 1 more day and I will have it! Currently on my mbp I am using a Logitech G5 (with SteerMouse), and a Logitech Elite Usb keyboard. They both work perfectly on OS X. Though the G5 needs that driver for good tracking. I think I'm going to get a Logitech G11 Keyboard when this one wears out. I'm so excited! In a way I'm really sticking it to m$ by not putting windows on ... haha custom built pc and you don't get my sale {censored}. chris3g
just a couple of updates, all audio functions do work, line-in, headphone out, front headphone port. AFP networking is very slow, not sure what's going on with this added a dell 2407WFP, the built-in USB hub works but i cannot seem to get cardreader to work, even though it is identified in the system profiler. emig647
So yesterday I got my parts. I'm typing to you on a very special computer right now. I didn't even install windows. I just went straight for OSX. Followed Chris3g's instructions... worked flawlessly the first time. I ran cinebench and the Multi-cpu test finished in 20 seconds. I was impressed. I think my ram is being seen as PC2-5300... Shouldn't it be 6400? This thing is definitely quicker than my 2.33ghz mbp and I haven't even overclocked it (c2d e6700 2.67ghz stock). I'm currently running at 19deg cels on the cpu. So I have some room to go This is so bitchen I love it. Thanks for all the help guys!
