Swad
So, I've googled for this, but what's the name of the Debian package for Ubuntu that has a bunch of additional features, like .mp3 codecs, non-OSS drivers, etc? Thanks! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46969-ubuntu-feature-package/ Share on other sites
borisbadenov
What are you looking to do? You might need to change the settings on your repositories. Follow this link. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu Ubuntu does not come with some features installed, like commercial dvd playback and mp3 because they are not totally open source. By choosing the Multiverse repositories, you will have access to these needed codecs. Then, just install the software you need with the synaptic update. Hope this helps Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46969-ubuntu-feature-package/#findComment-336390 Share on other sites
Swad
Thanks Boris. I remember reading about, and bookmarking at some point, an Ubuntu package that had all of these codecs together, including drivers for nVIDIA, etc. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, and it may not even still exist. Thanks! EDIT: This was sort of what I was talking about, but not quite.... Swad
Thanks, PingunZ. I'm planning on checking out Feisty when it comes out, which will hopefully be next month. I'll be looking forward to it! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46969-ubuntu-feature-package/#findComment-336524 Share on other sites
Nargilem
Just installed it, No bugs till now Hasn't changed a lot over Edgy but those Desktop Effects really suck It's like Compiz without any options .. bah =/ Instead of waiting a month for Feisty, meanwhile you might try Arch Linux ? borisbadenov
Pingunz, I hear what you say about Ubuntu but I am just so used to messing about in Linux that I am used to the lack of serious eye candy ala OSX. I've tried out a lot of the different linux flavours and I found that Ubuntu was the easiest to install Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46969-ubuntu-feature-package/#findComment-336582 Share on other sites
Nargilem
Linux does have OSX like eye candy .. I suggest you google for ' beryl ' Ps: You're completely right about the easyness of install in ubuntu, but there is more then the installation Cheers Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46969-ubuntu-feature-package/#findComment-336596 Share on other sites
asap18
there are the nonfree win32 codec package which is on mplayers site. envy can be used to get nvidia drivers. Also, mp3 support depends on the engine you are using (gstreamer, xine ..etc). AdamBeutler
I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 and it works great and Beryl is amazing. I have installed different flavors of Linux in the past but this is the first one that I will actually use as my main machine. It is definitely worth checking out! I don't know what the other guy was complaining about but I haven't had any bugs in my system and beryl has a ton of reconfigurability, way better then compiz. dudeness3
I use Ubuntu Edgy and Automatix, I don't really like gDesklets, but it has a cute little dock, and makes my Ubuntu look like OS X after some modifications Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46969-ubuntu-feature-package/#findComment-338797 Share on other sites
Nargilem
I don't know what the other guy was complaining about but I haven't had any bugs in my system and beryl has a ton of reconfigurability, way better then compiz. I was complaining about the so called Desktop Effects ( you can find those in preferences afaik ) Those are like compiz, but simplified and .. not good I know you can install Beryl easily with a lot of configrations etc, but I wasn't talking about that Cheers Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46969-ubuntu-feature-package/#findComment-344113 Share on other sites
