b46289
IM trying to install OS X 1.4.6 (JAS Image) on my P4 2.4ghz, 512mb ram, nvidia 6200 agp 256 mb, ASRock P4VM800, with my WD 160 GB hard drive. I set aside 20 GB at the end of the drive after my NTFS WIndows XP SP2 partition. Sadly disk utility (on hte install dvd) says my hard drive is only 128 GB. It won't allow me to see the partition whihc occurs after the 139th GB. Is there a fix? Sabr
I had the problem too once... You could try making a partition infront of your first partition. That may work. Alessandro17
I came to the conclusion, several months ago, that it is (much) better to install OS X on a separate HD. HDs are currently very cheap, thus that should be pretty easy to do. b46289
Firstly another hard drive is not an option. Secondly will moving my NTFS to the end of the drive not screw up my Windows XP file system? Wont the MBR be screwed? I need my XP partition, work that i need is on there. Thridly how will i configure the dual boot, will osx figure it out? or do i need to do some dirty work? Will Xp still boot if i do move the NTFS partition? Also is the problem fixed in 10.4.7, 10.4.8, or 10.4.9? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/45323-128-gb-limit/#findComment-324033 Share on other sites

I can't give you a definitive answer, but you are looking for trouble, big time. The first time I installed OS X (I believe it was 10.4.5) I screwed up everything on that hard drive. Thridly how will i configure the dual boot, will osx figure it out? or do i need to do some dirty work? Will Xp still boot if i do move the NTFS partition? I suggest Acronis OS selector. riktor
Hello, First of all you cannot move a booting partition anywhere else, or it wont boot. Second the reason why OS X wont read beyon 128GB is a limitation probably caused by Large Bit Addressing (LBA) not being recognized by the OS X installer. If this is the case then either a second harddrive will be needed or a reformat to make OS X the first partition. If it is LBA then be aware that you will not be able to make a partition bigger then 128GB. b46289
I've heard in other forums that there are ways to rewrite the LBA so OS X will read the whole thing. Is this an option, and will it work pre-installation? or must i wipe my hard drive? is this only a problem in 10.4.6? is it fixed in 10.4.7, .8, or .9? Thanks for your help so far . I have 2 250GB hard drives, and OS X has always been able to "see" them (I believe I began with 10.4.5) Maybe yours is a hardware/BIOS issue. Have you tried to update the BIOS? b46289
Ok i fixed it by moving the partition in far enough to be inside the 128 gb mark. So i install OS X and it sits on the optimizing volume screen ofr a whileso i leave, when i come back my cmputer has rebooted and its back at the press enter to start the installation in command prompt. So i remove the CD and reboot and XP starts. So i figure i need a boot loader so i install Acronis OS Selector but it wont let me start the boot selector manager! So i decide i just want OS X and try setting my os x partition as the active partition from QT Parted (linux partitioning software) i reboot and I just see a blinking dah and my hard drive light going solid. i wait a few minutes to no avail. I switch the active partition back to XP. What do i do? Should i just wipe everthing and reinstall it all? If so can I do OS X first? I almost wrote in a previous post that both Windows and OS X need an active, primary partition. That is impossible on one hard drive. I might be wrong though, and I welcome suggestions by people who know this matter better than me. b46289
No it is possible to have two primary partitions on one hard disk. As for active partitions, yes there can only be one. Acronis OS Selector is installled on my NTFS XP partition which is active at boot, but if I select OS X it will switch which one is active allowwing OS X to boot. I have everything configured, but when I try to boot into OS X (using acronis boot selector) i only get a blinking dash on a black screen, with my hard drive light on solid. I let it sit for 10 minutes but nothing happpened. I have tried reinstalling OS X twice. Can anybody help me? Chevelle
I'm having the same problem. Booting using "JaS AMD/Intel SSE2/SSE3 iSO" results in OSX only seeing 128GB of my 160GB Seagate SATA HDD. I'm going to try the iSO without the PPF applied to see if that helps. b46289
All problems fixed except for the 128 GB limit, but that doesnt bother me, i moved the partitions around. I also fixed the blac kscreen. I was accidentally installing the AMD pathces when I use and Intel processor. This screws everything up be sure to uncheck it!Now all I need to do is get my on board ethernet going (problematic), but my wireless nic happens to have beta drivers! Thx for all your help everyone!
