macbooknewby
Hi guys, I am a new macbook user, i got the 2.0 GHz Core-2-Duo white 13.3" macbook. Bcoz the current HDD is only 80 GB (with OSX on it), and I really need to use Windows, so I would like to get another brand new HDD and install Windows XP on it. In another word, I want to take the existing HDD (which has OSX) out, and put in a new blank HDD, and try to install Windows XP on the blank one. Can it be done like that? from my understanding, using Bootcamp is very straightforward BUT that means OSX must exist together with Windows at the same time, and I want to avoid that situation if I can to save space. Any help or instructions will be greatly appreciated !! munky
i dont think it can be done easily. how about just buying a massive drive for the macbook (say 160Gb?), install OS X, then do the bootcamp magic and make the OS X partition as small as possible? The Bard
@munky: I'm no Mac user yet... I still observing before buying MacBook. Can you give me info... how big MacOSX Tiger installed on HDD? and if I install winxp as second os.. how big the ideal size I need to spare the HDD for MacOS? erbic
I don't really see why this couldn't be done. I didn't think the BIOS emulation in EFI was dependent on Mac OS X being installed. Here's how I would do it (theoretically, anyway). 1. Receive MacBook, with installed Mac OS X. 2. Install Boot Camp, and burn the Mac Drivers Disc so you don't have to come back here begging for the drivers. 3. Insert Windows CD/DVD and reboot. Hold down Option on boot to pick the CD as a boot device. 4. In Windows Setup, format what was your Mac partition as NTFS. Then install on it. If I were you, I wouldn't delete any partition data before the Mac partition on the hard disk. I don't know how crucial that stuff is, but it can't hurt to leave it. It's only around 200 MB. sandmanfvrga
Why would this be hard? As long as you can boot from the XP disc, then you blow away the entire hdd and there you go. But why in God's name do you want to run XP only? macsrawesome
I think that you should just go with the above mentioned of making the osx partition as small as possible, you probabaly won't nothice that small amout if you get a decent hd. also, if something were to go wrong with windows you would have a backup. EDIT: I am a bit biased though, but I think you should try your best to leave a functional copy of osx on it, if anything but for a backup.
