I'm currently running 10.4.8 with 8.8.1 mifki.

Now i'm trying to replace the kernel with a newer version, doing this as mentioned in the upgrade manual.

mv /mach_kernel /mach_kernel.unpatched
cp /path/to/kernel /mach_kernel

After i've repaired permissions, and reboot, i end up in one reboot after another, starting at the part where the system checks for the kernel.

Now for the question:

Is it even possible to replace the kernel? And if so, what am I doing wrong?

Well I don't know how you got into this situation, but might be able to help you fix it.

I just toasted my laptop by accidently replacing my kernel with one from a PPC 10.4.8 Install DVD...let's just say I need to start being more creative making labels for my DVD's.

Ok, now the way I am going to fix it is as follows:

1. Boot into Windows XP...if you don't already have a dual boot system you will need an external drive to load XP on.

2. Once you have XP running load MacDrive

3. IN WINDOWS put your 10.4.8 DVD in the drive.

4. Copy the kernel from the root of the DVD (trying not to use the PPC one this time) to the root of my Mac partition (which should have mounted automatically when you run MacDrive).

5. Reboot and you should be ok.

or...

If you are familiar with how to use terminal, simply but off the 10.4.8 DVD and copy the kernel to the root of your hd.

Don't forget to repair permissions after either method.
