jdazzle34 Posted February 20, 2007 Share Posted February 20, 2007 I hope i'm not bothering you guys with this, but I've looked all over google, the x86 wiki and this forum and haven't really found an answer to what my system is doing. I've installed OS X on to my system using the 10.4.6 JaS image, and I had to use VMware to do the install as i don't have an internal DVD-ROM and i could never get the install disk to boot from my external drive. I installed OS X on to it's own IDE Hard Disk and everything went without a hitch. I also made sure to install the updates and patches for intel. My system is as follows: Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 mobo C2D e6300 cpu 1 gig PC6400 RAM 1 160gb SATA Hard Drive (Master) 1 20gb IDE Hard Drive (this is where I installed OS X to) nVidia 7300GT gpu I've run OS X through VMware and haven't had any issues with it. But I've added Chain0 to the boot.ini and have tried to boot my system straight into OS X. This is where the problem is. I get the intro screen with the apple logo and the spinning dial, but then after about 1 minute i get the Prohibitory Sign showing up. I've read things about resetting NVRAM or having to check the boot files for OS X. Since I can run the OS from VMware, I'm thinking that the problem might be that my system is trying to boot from my SATA drive which doesn't have any of the OS X files. If anyone knows of a way I could change this so my 20gb drive will be the boot disk for OS X, or if you think it's another problem, I'd love to hear any suggestions. Thanks. hecker Posted February 20, 2007 Share Posted February 20, 2007 (edited) Hey man, -try forcing your BIOS to boot only from the IDE drive -disable any other drives to make sure they aren't being accessed (Disable onboard SATA too) -try to boot into single user mode (type -s in the darwin bootmanager. If you can't see the bootmanager bash F8 right before the drive starts booting your OSX) If you still get the error then you might want to try checking the partition your OSX partition by using fdisk. Maybe you just need to fix the MBR (master boot record). Since you obviously can't boot your OSX now, you will need to boot from the DVD or through VMWare. I am not sure if you can fix the MBR through VMWare though. This seems to be a lot more common problem, so i'm looking through the wiki, etc, to try and find a solution. jdazzle34 Posted February 20, 2007 Author Share Posted February 20, 2007 update: i've tried several solutions, i've unplugged my SATA drive so that just my IDE drive was running and booted from it. I'm still getting the "still waiting" error. the disk is disk0s1 when telling OSX where it is, but i'm still not getting it to show up. I did have a <Panic> error at one point, but i'm unsure as to what caused that. I am still uncertain whether my IDE is the 'primary' drive when the SATA is unplugged. My BIOS lists it as IDE Channel No. 4, because the first 3 channels are for SATA connections. Could this be part of the problem? fatass99 Posted February 22, 2007 Share Posted February 22, 2007 hey everyone i'm currently stuck in that part too! I installed OSX 10.4.6 JAS DVD it took a while but I finally got it to install, everything seemed to be as if it will work properly but nope. I got the the gray screen then I get the "no smoking" sign and i'm stuck, I hit F8 to go to the boot up options and typed in -v (verbose) and it gets stuck on "waiting for root drive" and thats it for me. Anyone got any ideas/suggestions?
