bsgjunkie
Dell e1505 OSX partition 1 XP partition 2 Vista partition 3 I just reinstalled OSX 10.4.8 after having a Chain0 error. Upon reinstall, the laptop no longer boots to the vista bootloader, instead it goes straight to a HFS+ partition error. If I used supergrub to boot to the windows partition it boots to the vista boot menu. From there I can select OSX and it boots perfectly. I'm guessing I need to activate the partition? I have tried to do it through supergrub but nothing changes. Is it possible to do through Windows? I'm sure if can be done through terminal in OSX, but I have no clue what the commands are. Any help would be appreciated. Junkie Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42502-need-to-activate-the-vista-boot-loader/ Share on other sites
bottleNeckKiller
I have not done what you describe but EasyBCD boot loader works. Installed from Vista and it can boot Mac OS X. It is not too difficult and is the best to me. Google to find it. If you want to boot XP you must have boot.ini, NTDETECT.exe and NTLDR files in your Vista root dir (C:\) (if not in Vista dir it will not see it). One of the last two files (not sure which one, NTDETECT and NTLDR) is in the XP installation disc. And the other two can be found in the installed XP OS. If you can not find boot.ini in the OS then create a file.txt file and name it boot.ini and copy the data in boot.ini somewhere in System Properties where you have the boot options into boot.ini. jrrjrr
In Windows, there is a Control Panel thing for Administrative Tools. One of them is the Computer Manager. Inside it, you can select Storage - Disk Management. It will list the disks and partitions you have and tell you which is active. You can right click over the one you want make active instead and it will give you an option to do that. You are right I think in diagnosing your problem. The OSX bootloader uses the active flag to know which partition to default to. You might also be able to make the change if you get into OSX and then use the Startup Disk utility from there. Telling it to start from the Windows disk should do the same change of the active partition flag. Hope this is all correct and post back if it helps or hurts! Just to note, the my xp partition needed to be activated for the bootmenu to be activated.
