Is there such thing as a "dummies" guide to a DIY?

Or am I nuts to think I could do this? I've never built a computer. The most I've done is installed ram and pci cards and harddrives....

I've never built one but I am interested in giving this a try.

Has anyone created a step-by-step guide to doing this? I'd really like to create a stable home brew

Welcome to this forum.

You should take a look at the wiki sites: www.osx86project.org The have compiled great guides in there.

Read the "stickies". Those are the threads moderators glue to the top section of all the forums. You might also want to skim through the whole " Homebrew Macs (Home of OSx86)" section of this forum.

Learn how to search the forums (check the search help) and also try searching with google.

My personal searching strategy is to use the advanced search mask, displaying the results as posts (options are on the right side). I then use the browsers "find" tool to pinpoint my search query.

For general guidelines on how to build a computer visit:

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_To_Build_A_Computer

You will also need some very basic knowledge on how to use the terminal window. Nothing much. Just basic stuff.

Good luck!

if you can install ram, pci cards and hard drives, its not exactly a huge leap to install a cpu in a mobo, or a mobo in a case.

check the HCLs on the wiki, or bofors box threads in the tutorials section for some ideas on hardware selection.

Thanks for all the fast replies.

I'm reading a lot.

I'm reading plenty of the tutorials.

Seems a lot of things are unstable... rocky ship..

Might be too much of a gamble for a beginner to take.

I think I'm confident I could do it but I wouldnt really know how to pick all the parts I needed, the right case, the right tools...

I'll keep reading. I'm looking forward to embarking on this project

Just to see if I'm on the right track.

Could I buy an already assembled kit like this...

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...nufacture=Intel

And work with it? Or would it be dumb to do it that way?

Do I need to ensure every part will work and then ensure every componet will work together?

There's a compatibility list on the wiki site.

Reading these forums is totally worth it. Needless to say that the Mac OS X may change the way you work with a computer forever. ;)

And if you really get stuck you will get help from us.

beleive me, you can build a cheap intel hackintosh which will whip your G4.

try this thread for a start: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=7393

or this for a more up to date (but also more expensive) option: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...508&st=126#

basically... yeah. everything on that board will work out of the box in 10.4.8 (or will require VERY minimal patching). fully supported gfx (GMA950), supported audio, gigabit ethernet, firewire, you name it.

just grab the latest 10.4.8 disc and install. you will be amazed how well this machine will work.

i'm running a Pentium D920 myself, and it works k-sweet. my hackintosh (with 1Gb of dual channel) outperforms my MacBook Pro (with 2Gb) - see my sig for scores / specs!

get those two, a box to put it in, some RAM, hard disk and DVD drive, and you're good to go.

(btw a good burner is the Pioneer DVR-110D - OSX will even think its apple supplied  )
