Overshee
Suppose I had a liscence to OSx86 laying around and I wanted to install it on my regular PC. I have talked about this with a friend and he says it involves very specific CPUs, vcards, etc that work with it. I have the following: ------------------ System Information ------------------ Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 System Manufacturer: NVIDIA System Model: AWRDACPI BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz Memory: 2048MB RAM Page File: 547MB used, 3392MB available --------------- Display Devices --------------- Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT Manufacturer: NVIDIA Chip type: GeForce 6600 GT DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0140&SUBSYS_21181682&REV_A2 Display Memory: 128.0 MB Current Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (60Hz) Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor Monitor Max Res: 1600,1200 Driver Name: nv4_disp.dll Driver Version: 6.14.0010.9371 (English) DDI Version: 9 (or higher) Driver Attributes: Final Retail Driver Date/Size: 10/22/2006 12:22:00, 4527488 bytes WHQL Logo'd: Yes WHQL Date Stamp: n/a VDD: n/a Mini VDD: nv4_mini.sys Mini VDD Date: 10/22/2006 12:22:00, 3994624 bytes Device Identifier: {D7B71E3E-4200-11CF-A951-120103C2CB35} Vendor ID: 0x10DE Device ID: 0x0140 SubSys ID: 0x21181682 Revision ID: 0x00A2 Revision ID: 0x00A2 ------------- Sound Devices ------------- Description: SB X-Fi Audio [A000] Default Sound Playback: Yes Default Voice Playback: Yes Hardware ID: PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0005&SUBSYS_00211102&REV_00 Manufacturer ID: 1 Product ID: 100 Type: WDM Driver Name: ctaud2k.sys Driver Version: 5.12.0001.1187 (English) Driver Attributes: Final Retail WHQL Logo'd: Yes Date and Size: 8/17/2006 11:17:10, 500480 bytes Other Files: Driver Provider: Creative HW Accel Level: Full Cap Flags: 0xF5F Min/Max Sample Rate: 1, 192000 Static/Strm HW Mix Bufs: 128, 64 Static/Strm HW 3D Bufs: 128, 64 HW Memory: 0 Voice Management: Yes EAX(tm) 2.0 Listen/Src: Yes, Yes I3DL2(tm) Listen/Src: No, No Sensaura(tm) ZoomFX(tm): No Registry: OK Sound Test Result: Not run --------------------- Sound Capture Devices --------------------- Description: SB X-Fi Audio [A000] Default Sound Capture: Yes Default Voice Capture: Yes Driver Name: ctaud2k.sys Driver Version: 5.12.0001.1187 (English) Driver Attributes: Final Retail Date and Size: 8/17/2006 11:17:10, 500480 bytes Cap Flags: 0x41 Format Flags: 0xFFF Can I do it? Guest bikedude880
Processor: Yes Graphics: Yes (search for Natit or Titan) Audio: No (Incompatible chip) But it all boils down to the motherboard... care to tells us what motherboard you have? EDIT: OS X doesn't need a license key (unless it's the server version )
Overshee
A Gigabyte nForce 4 SLI K8 Triton DDR400 (LOL, So I kinda just wrote everything on the box, not sure what you need exactly.)
Korrupted
nForce4 has issues with SATA hard drives, so whip out an old IDE one if you plan on installing osx86. There's a driver in the works, but I don't think it's had any successful releases yet.
Guest bikedude880
Your best bet will be to install on and IDE (PATA) drive as SATA is not entirely working on nForce4 under OS X yet. Get either the latest JaS release or the Tubgirl release and have fun.
Overshee
I just so happen to have TWO IDE hard drives. Yay, I'm very excited. Now, what versions of OSX will work and are there any good tutorials?
Guest bikedude880
You will need the 10.4.8 release (as your graphics will work under that and not under previous versions.) If you can insert a DVD and follow simple on-screen instructions, then tutorials aren't really needed.
Overshee
So I assume I create a new partition and away I go? Do I need any programs or anything? Is the partition a different file system?
Guest bikedude880
Correct. You will need to create a new partition in the "Disk Utility" (located in a drop-down menu). This partition will be formated as HFS+ and have a MBR (PC scheme boot style). Everything you need to install is located on the install DVD itself. Don't forget to select the right patches for your system.
Overshee
Where are these patches and how would dual boot work? Oh, and what drop down menu is this disk utility in? O.o?
munky
boot from, say, the JaS 10.4.8 disc. the drop down menu is at the top of the screen in the installer. the patches are located in the 'Customize' button during installation. you must choose the appropriate patches for your system (in your case, AMD SSE3. you have three main options for dual boot: 1) You use the Windows bootloader, and a special file called chain0 from your osx86 installation. Search the forum for 'chain0' for more info. 2) You use Mac OS X's Darwin bootloader. It can boot Windows also. If you mark your OSx86 partition as the 'active' partition, this bootloader will be used by default. (This is the one I use, fwiw). 3) You use a third-party bootloader such as Grub or Acronis or whatever. I dont have any specific knowledge on this, you'd have to search. Overshee
Is this the right disc? <torrent link removed by moderator - no warez please!>
munky
and no, that was a ppf - a sort of binary patch to an existing disc image.
Overshee
I'm trying to install but neither of my 2 USB keyboards work, and I don't have any PS2 ones...
munky
well you could always just borrow a PS2 keyboard off a friend? or buy one - they cost about £6 here...
Overshee
well is there any way to use USB?
Overshee
So I'm trying to get this to work, but I used the method described in http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...c=6890&st=0 but I get a HPS+ Partition Error... What do I do? Also, it seems I can't use USB in any of these steps, will I always have to have a PS2 keyboard plugged in?
