eberts
Hi there, my mac used to work fine with my GMA950. I bought a MSI 7300GT-256 PCIe expecting a gain in performance and some more RAM available for the system. I finally got it working with Natit_Uni installer with QE/CI. First thing I did was a XBench test. Compared to the GMA950 I lost around 10 points. That was due to a much poorer performance in OpenGL which scored nearly 100 less (107, before 193). Additionally, it seems as if the animation effects are sometimes a bit slower. Maybe I did something wrong (in Natit_Uni there's also a(nother) OpenGL framework). Since I'm not a gamer, I think I'll just give the card back. B4 returning it, I wanted to ask if there's anything I can try to increase performance or did I just do a mistake? I thought a dedicated graphic card always increases performance. The 7300GT is actually used in a MacPro so it can't really be slower than the one used in MacMini... Any ideas? chuuey
did you try Titan instead of Natit? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/40416-nvidia-7300gt-disappointing/#findComment-288509 Share on other sites
eberts
Not yet. To be honest I don't really understand how natit/titan works (injecting code ?) so I also don't know what to backup before: NVDANV40+GeForce+NVDAResman ? these are currently loaded (Natit.kext isn't, is that ok?) consolation
the 7300 is a very budget card, maybe you should have stumped up for at least a 7600? BW, xbench score are largely nonsense; in my G4 I would score higher with the old mx4 than with my 9800. Try testing with openmark from here http://www.giofx.net/ select bench mark from the menu and than compare your results. I honestly don't know why ppl give a toss about xbench -you might as well use a random number generator... eberts
I just ran the Openmark test, here are the results: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT OpenGL Engine 1440x900x32 Score 8323 1152 triangles 9 FPS Since I can't find any website with results to compare with, I've no idea if this is good or bad. That's respectable, my 7600GS gets me ~10500, a 7900GS ~16000. This score is much more a realistic reflection of performance in 3D apps then xbench. eberts
Ok, your right. I found a forum to compare it. Exactly the same result (8323) on a MacPro 7300GT. Its owner was quite shocked when iMac or MBPro users(XT1600) published their scores. So I definitely don't have an OpenGL problem. But still the GMA950 felt a bit more responsive. Maybe it's simply driver related. You think I should try titan instead? Again, what shall I backup before? Thanks Edited January 30, 2007 by eberts Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/40416-nvidia-7300gt-disappointing/#findComment-288676 Share on other sites

frizbot
Titan works better than Natit in my experience, though there's a reason for Natit existing. GMA950 is used by Apple, is made by Intel, and should be supported well. OS X isn't a great gaming platform, and OS X86 will continue to have these hardware issues until MacEFIx86 is usable. If I had a machine with enough supported hardware, I'd probably switch, but until then I dual boot on machines I don't use much.
