I got a new macbook and just transfered my hdd files and everything to the new one. When i did the original install on my old one i took out printer drivers and stuff i didn't need, but on my new 1 i didnt have a chance to reinstall osx had to go with what i had from on hdd from the store which is everything. what can i manually remove to reduce the size of osx install or is there a program that will remove the not needed stuff.

Ive been wondering that myself. You might be able to if you rip the Mac OS X Install DVD to your harddrive, then edit the installer plists to remove packages for installation. I know you can add packages as there is a tutorial here, search the forums for how to do that and mess around with the files. I would try on a clean disk as it may not work, but experiment .

As far as automatically doing that stuff, you may be a little out of luck.

Personally, I have used Macaroni to clean up some of the stuff (remove localization files for languages I dont need) and then Pacifist along with the OS X installer disc to locate files like the printer drivers and other non-essencial things.

This maybe to late but try monolingual to remove languages you do not use and trimthefat.app to remove ppc binary if you are on a intel mac, got me about 2.5 gigs using just those two. Plus you can manually delete the printer drivers to save space also

You need the PPC architecture to run things through Rosseta

Huh?

Rosetta is to run PPC Code ON an Intel Mac.

PPC does not need Rosetta to run PPC Code, and Universal Binaries have PPC Code in the Fat Binaries.

Sorry, I misread, I though he said removing the PPC architecture for OS X, not just UB apps, bu a warning anyway, DO NOT DELETE THE PPC ARCHITECTURE USEING MONOLINGUAL!!

Or, DON'T USE MONOLINGUAL (that should be the real moral of the story here).

The easiest way to remove stuff is to make a smart folder of files over 3 MB in size. If it gives too many files, make the requirements of the folder larger. Now as a word of warning, if you don't know whether or not something is important, assume it is importatnt.
