First of all the Specs of the System:

-MSI Board with K8T800 chipset (no more specifics as it is an OEM board or so)

-AMD Athlon 3400+ (Socket 754)

-Audio: Onboard CMI9761 (3059 1106)

-Graphics: Radeon 9700Pro (4e44 1002)

-NIC: Onboard Via Rhine

MacOS X: Installed from 'JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3' release.

Just to note the installation went super smooth.

Problems:

Networking: I installed the VIA Rhine kext i found on this forum. Surfing the internet work at normal speed. I can see other Computers on my Network.

But:

-I cannot connect to other Computers. If I do I first get the window where i have to choose which share i want t connect to. If i pick one it gives me a 'Alias could not be found' error.

-If i connect to this system from other systems i can browse the file system, but when i try to copy files to it it just stays forever at 'Preparing to copy files'

Info: This is no 'Windows-Mac' Conflict, as everything works perfect with a MacBook.

Audio: I tried a whole lotta bunch of different AppleAC97...kexts and other Audio kexts. With and without changing the device/vendor IDs and none of them work.

-On some kexts i get an error stating that it could not be loaded and on some not.

-System Profiler tells me (everytime) that i have no Audio Hardware.

-I even tried all the audio jacks the Motherboard has and nothing.

Info: On the 10.4.5. (Myzar) install i did some time ago I had sound, but only on the left channel.

Graphics: I get QE/CI, Ripple Effect, Cube Effect, etc. out of the Box. And of course: the artifacts that appear under the mouse.

-I only have the option for 1024x768x32.

-System Profiler says the card is PCI (although it should be AGP)

-everytime i try to install any graphics kexts/agpgart or whatnot i cannot fully boot the system. sometimes it hangs when trying to load the logon window and sometimes it doesn't even get that far.

Randomness:

-Sometimes i cannot copy files from/to USB devices (but browse the file system)

-iCal won't start. It just bounces forever in the Dock. (edit)

Now, here is my question to all of you: Could you help me solve this problems?

well i hope your are repairing perms and del kextcache and you should focus on your chipset and you trying random audio ports as a test scares me...

Just check your sound prefs and if your vol is lit and works then sound is working

Graphics: I get QE/CI, Ripple Effect, Cube Effect, etc. out of the Box. And of course: the artifacts that appear under the mouse.

here?

Thank you for your response.

The entry from the wiki does not apply to me. LAN: Not a Realtek Chipset, AUDIO: As I said its a CMI9761, I don't have SATA.

And USB does work, just not the way it should. Keyboard and Mouse are connected to USB and they have not a single Problem.

MacOS: not it's not patched. I will try using the patched one in 2 weeks. (away from home)

Connecting through smb://IP/share gives the same error as doing it the GUI way. I believe it's got something to do with the VIA Rhine.kext. but who knows.

Yes I am repairing permissions and clearing out caches.

I cannot harm harm the MB with headphones connected to say MIC-In or Line-In.

If I take a look at Sound in the Control Panel i can adjust everything as if it worked. But i cannot hear anything. If I press the vol+ /vol- on the Keyboard it even shows that I'm messing with the volume.

The link to the graphics thing. Yeah I already tried that. All it did was getting rid of QE/CI and i was still stuck with 1024x768.

I will update this thread in about 2 weeks when I'm back home and have tried some more solutions.

  • 3 weeks later...

Allright.

I installed with the patched JAS ISO.

First of all things that my setup doesn't like:

-if I enable Cool'n'Quiet the CPU always runs at 800Mhz

-Windows Vista: it almost always freezes during installing. Only had 2 in 25 tries succeed.

And now, OSX part XXII

-Sound is now working, but i cannot adjust the volume, hey at least it works.

-USB works now, but only if i put it in USB 1.1 mode in the BIOS. Slow but it works.

-I still have not found a solution the network mount Problems.

-I now have resolutions to chose from! How i did this:

+Installed Katana 02c (to get AGPGart, as a manual install always failed)

+then copied the Callisto006 kexts to the Extensions directory.

+Then i ran the 'Post Install' Script found i the Katana 02c release

+there i put '4e44' as that the DevID for my 9700pro

+After a restart i could choose different resolutions, i tried em up to 1600x1200 and they all work.

+Only QE/CI are not working, and that is a big drawback, as it makes the GUI really sluggish.

Ok, i can live with the network mount Problems, Slow USB, and sound volume adjustment problems.

But if someone know a way to get me QE/CI that would be really great

Edited by thr33face

i think my pc is living it's last days.

The only OSes i can install are: WindowsXP and OSX86.

Windows Vista locks up during the expanding files stage (and sometimes earlier). Ubuntu 6.10 locks up after 10-15 minutes when trying to install it. (always at a different percentage).

Then only stable OS is OSX86, yeah really! WindowsXP regularily locks up out of the blue. Sometime when doing nothing, sometimes when browsing the Web. Just weird.

Possible Problems:

-Via K8T800 and 9700pro combination.

Could be, but people that have problems with these two alwys refer to a so called "Infinite Loop Error", but i don't have that. Never had.

-The HDD

Could it be? Surface Tests revealed nothing, LowLevel Formating took nothing but way too long for my liking. tried it with an 80Gig one, still same symptomes. Guess it ain't the HDD.

-The Ram

Sounds reasonable, but: I tried it with swapping the modules against others and changing slots etc. Could be a general stabilty issue with DDR400 CL3 Ram, as that's all i got at the house (in different PCs). Memtest gave me Erros in Test#5 (i think), but only when i lowered the timings to 2-2-2-4 and faster (standard is 3-3-3-8 and is fine in a 5hour loop)

-The PSU

Tried two. One is a 350W FSP and the other is a generic 400W one. both exhibit the same behaviour, so i guess the PSU is not to blame. (or both have problems)

-The Mobo

Yeah, how would i test this? My 'pseudo' test included disabling various Integrated Pereipherals, messing with the timings, Set the Target temp to something lower (Louder and cooler), etc. I also did visual inspection for blowed caps, bad interconnects, touching things, etc. Without an identical one to exchange i cannot really test the MB.

-The CPU

Again, I don't have a spare A64 for the Socket754, so i cannot really Test that. But the temps of it are OK, I'd Say. They're: 43-50 (depending on the Fan Settings)

-Misc Stuff:

The Keyboard: Could it be? As i've only got one (cherry usb) i cannot test that possibility.

Mouse: Again, huh? No way the kb/mouse are at fault.

DVDDrive: Sure not, tried three different ones: Sony, Lite-On, Samsung.

The missing floppy drive?

But after all, this ain't no problem at all, as long as the MacBook works (and it works good).

I'll probably get me a new PC sometime later this year. A small C2D machine with some ram and a GC in a budget of 500€ (that's probably 650 US$)

I probably will update this thread when i buy that new PC sometime in summer to autum. Just warning the people so they don't tell me that I revived such an 'old' thread.

Old is such a relative thing anyway.

Fixed the resolution problem

Use the out of the box drivers with qe/ci support.

Follow the next steps:

Copy:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

to desktop

edit (desktop version):

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

into:

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

<string>"Graphics Mode"="1280*1024*32"</string>

Save and exit

Copy your desktop version back to:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

Click authenticate

Click overwrite

Enter password

Done

I even got a nice loading screen...

You don't have to change your drivers, it's just changing the resolution during boot.
