Rez.
Hello. Well i've finally got my OSX86 installed with Video (CI/QE), Audio and Networking. Thanks to the developers for making this happen. I have one problem though. Evertime I boot into OSX the Hard Drive does not stop being accessed after OSX has fully loaded. In fact, It it being rigorously accessed for a period of 12-15 minutes. I'm not talking a few accesses every few moments. It's constantly in use for the duration mentioned above. This isn't normal operation in my book and never did it in 10.4.6 . I used the fs_usage command in terminal and have attatched around Seven seconds of output. The information means little to me and googling a few terms found in the output yielded little results (For me). The sheer amount of data being read and written in those Seven seconds is amazing. Now multiply what's in the attatched file by 15 minutes. Keep in mind that I am not doing/running anything during this time. In fact the whole OS is pretty unresponsive through out the duration of the Hard Drive being accessed for the first 15 minutes. I really don't fancy having this Hard Drive ruined which will happen pretty quickly if this keeps up. When the HDD finally does sort itself out, All is well and working. Does anyone have any clue what's going on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. PS: Using OSX 10.4.8 Simthex Kernel 8.8.1 FS_Output_7.rtf Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/38616-hard-drive-being-furiously-accessed-on-startup/ Share on other sites

jrrjrr
Try this experiment... In Terminal run: sudo mv /usr/bin/update_prebinding /usr/bin/update_prebinding_off And then reboot and see if it has stopped the disk activity from happening. My system insists on running update_prebinding at every boot and it is very drive intensive for about 2 minutes. Renaming the update_prebinding file stops it from happening. Every once in a while, I rename it back so that it _can_ run, and I also have to rename it back to allow Pacifist to start when I want to use Pacifist. I just looked at the log you attached. It is definitely update_prebinding that is doing it to you. It is listed each time in there. Someone posted in another thread about this basic issue that it also has something to do with having installed some Unsanity haxie thing and that when they uninstalled it, the update_prebinding behavior stopped. Rez.
Thank you jrrjrr, That worked like a charm. I renamed update_prebinding to update_prebind_off and the Hard Drive activity stopped. I do indeed have an Unsanity Haxie installed (Shapeshifter to be exact). How long before I need to rename it back? Once a week? Thank you again for the assist. jrrjrr
I think update_prebinding is called to run at the end of .pkg installations - the full installer thing where at the end it says "optimizing you system" or something like that. It doesn't get run for drag-and-drop installs. Once a week should be fine. Or just after installing anything that uses an installer. Or never, if you are lazy. The system will still run fine but supposedly a trifle slower without prebinding. To run it manually, you don't need to rename it back. I think you can just type the renamed name in Terminal, might not even need the "sudo" in front: sudo /usr/bin/update_prebinding_off <<<------ or whatever you have renamed it to and it will run. Then grab a snack and it will be done when you get back!
