Hi all! I've managed to install JaS 10.4.8 and using Semthex latest kernel (10 Jan 07) on my Travelmate 4222. Everything's working great! Thanks to all the people who can make this a real experience! :D

Simple question though, is there any way to customize darwin loader? I mean, maybe just like Lilo or GRUB that can be "skinned" or such. I hate to look at that black-ugly-only-text interface while behind it lies The World's Most Advance Operating System! Googling and wiki search to no avail. Not even a litlle clue to find darwin loader manual or tutorial. *sigh* So if there's among you guys who know how to release the beast out of the loader, tips or trick, howtos or anything will be very appreciated! Thanks in advance! :(

You only see it for a few seconds, compared to hours of OSX gooey.

But if you want something lean and limitedly skinnable, you of course can go the way of grub.

Then there's Acronis OS Selector, coming with a price: litterally (financially), much slower, not as stable; but you can have a osx icon to go with it (search in "Wallpapers, Icons, Skins..." sub-forum).

Of course, that depends on what you do when you boot: if you want to stand there for a few minutes contemplating the boot options graphically, I guess you'll be depressed by the choices!

Have a good day.

I think the man has something else in mind... :-)

In com.apple.boot.plist remove

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>10</string>

as well as search for a line that should look like

<key>-v</key>

and remove it too.

Your OS X should now boot without the ugly stuff.

No Dellius, I can't do that since I triple-boot with XP and Linux.. All I want is a manual/tutorial regarding darwin loader. So if it's possible, I want to costumize the look of the darwin loader when boots.. Thx anyway.. :wink2:

I also have multi boot systems. Some Linux, WinXP and OS X. I use a small, free, program called Smart Boot Manager. It fits in the master boot record section of the first HDD track or it may also be run from a floppy for evaluation prior to HDD install.

The program has a character based semi graphic user interface which offers some limited customization and ample built in help screens. I have used it for several years with no ill effects on both of my desktop systems.

You may learn more about it from this web site http://www.iol.ie/%7Ekrakowangus/sbm/sbm.htm

Hope you locate what you are searching for.

Dellius: Thanks.. Your idea is also good, maybe I'll end up like that if I don't find another solution.. ;)

BladeRunner: Thanks for the link. I've read that the boot manager can be installed (or uninstall) to MBR. Have several question though, where is Darwin loader installed anyway? If I install SBM and later decide to uninstall it, how can I have access to Darwin loader again? My current partition is as follow:

Partition 1: MacOSX

Partition 2: WinXP

Partition 3: Linux

Thanks!

I assume you have some master boot record in place now. If you install SMB it saves your existing MBR and replaces it if you uninstall. If you remove SBM, you would revert to whatever it is you are using now.

On one of my desktops I had WinXP installed. I used a partitioning tool to remove the existing primary partition and create two primary partitions. Then, using Norton Ghost I restored a Ghost image of WinXP to the first primary partition. At this point, I had a system that would boot WinXP and an empty - unformatted - extra primary partition.

I installed Smart Boot Manager and, after configuring it, it would boot WinXP. At this point I inserted a JaS-10.4.7-install DVD and installed OSX on the second primary partition. When the system reboots after the OSX install it entered SBM. At this point it only showed a pointer to WinXP. I had SBM rescan the hard drive and it then showed a pointer to WinXP and an "unknown" system.

The unknown system was on the second partition where I installed OSX. Change the SBM labels to suite your needs and tell it to boot the second partition. The next thing you should see is the Loading Darwin message. You can configure SBM to remember the last partition selected and boot it automatically after a selected timeout.

Hope this answers your questions.

Ow Ic.. Thank you BladeRunner.. Hmm.. So I assume that Darwin Loader is installed on the first sector of the partition where OSX installed (?) Or maybe in MBR? Ah ok I'll have a look myself with using different partition configuration then. Thanks for pointing out anyway.. :(
