Okay, so, I've been thinking about upgrading to the 3000+ Venice core for some time now... but I have some questions..

First off, I know that the Venice core can overclock like a champ on stock cooling - idle temps of 29C aren't unusual... But I'm currently running a 2800+ Clawhammer and I'm wondering how much of a difference SSE3 will really make. The chip is like 120... But I paid 140 for the chip I have now (built last November). My main reason for the upgrade is obviously the move the PCI-e but what's the performance increase going to be like with SSE3 as opposed to using SSE3->SSE2 conversion that I currently use? I don't know if I can justify the cash or not?

As for building an Intel system, as I'm sure I'm going to get some responses about, I can't stand Intel. I won't use an Intel chip unless AMD takes the plunge off the face of the planet. I've used AMD since before AMD was AMD (they bought out Nexgen) and I'm not about to stop.

Ideas?

My current system:

Soltek K8AN2E-GR

Athlon 64 2800+ (Socket 754, Clawhammer)

1 gig Geil Value Series DDR400

Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum card

200GB Maxtor UATA133 drive (has Mac OS X on 128GB and SuSE Linux 10.0 on the rest)

250GB Hitachi DeskStar SATA (Windows XP)

D-Link RTL8139-based chip (onboard nVidia gigabit has too much of a performance hit and this runs in OS X)

My new system would be:

DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR

Athlon 64 3000+ Venice

nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX

everything else the same.

Is it worth the upgrade and what problems might I have with OS X? It seemed to install (Generic DVD installer that was patched) and run pretty well on my current config. Can anyone see any possible installation issues? I'm currently running sound off the motherboard in OS X.

Dude, it is worth it!

Just the 90nm instead of 0.3micron core is so much better for overclocking...

Here's an explanation, 90nm is the smallest wiring they have for AMD64s, smaller wiring means less heat and less heat means more overclcoking!

I'm running a AMD 64 3000+ OC'ed 0.5ghz!

*not to mention, in my system it runs about 29-32deg!

A few things to know is I replaced the thermal grease with another and my case is a thermaltake tsunami dream.

But trust me on this, the venice core is better than clawhammer for overclocking and cooling!

As for the nforce4 mobo, OSx86 has NO sata support with it...at all!

Also, I'd wait to get that 7800, i hear they run real hot...I'm not sure but a 6800 may OC as well enough almost the speed of a 7800, search google and check it out...I mean thats alot of money you can save!

Well, I know all about the benefits of the proc... And its .13 micron. B)... But my whole question is compatibility.

As for getting a 7800 out of a 6800... not a chance in hell... even with water cooling, I seriously doubt the 6800 could come CLOSE to a 7800... the 7800 is ~2 times faster! :P

But yeah, I don't need SATA... that's what XP is for. The 200gig drive is an ATA133 drive and that's what I install OS X on.

BTW, my current Clawhammer is OC'd ~.25ghz and its running stock cooling in a Thermaltake Xaser III case. I'd push it a bit higher but my memory just won't do it. The Venice core has a LOT more room for overclocking either way though - its not that hard to get your Venice 3000+ or 3200+ up to 3ghz core, if you've got DDR 600 (Samsung TCCD chips).

But basically, I'm thinking I'm going to spring for it anyway. This system just isn't doing it anymore... or maybe its the nerd inside me dreaming of a better world... Either way, once I get the cash, I'm going to upgrade to the Venice core, 2 gigs of G.Skill, the DFI board, and an nVidia Geforce 7800 GT or GTX.

And where did you hear about heat with the 7800s? I've not heard one complaint yet.
