harsha
hi.....guys im new here..........and want some help regarding hardware as im planning to buy a new pc im planning to buy a INTEL CORE2DUO@2.13GHz processor im a little bit confused regard which motherboard to choose........ im going for 945 chipset....... as 975 is costly and 965 are not supported properly i have decided on three motherboards 1)GA-945G-S3 GIGABYTE 2)P5LD2-VM DH ASUS 3)ConRoe945G-DVi Asrock which one should i go for???? CAN I GET AUDIO AND LAN WORKING ON ALL OF THEM ..... EXPECIALLY THE GIGABYTE .....DID ANYONE HAVE THIS BOARD?????? i have seen in one of the forums that the gigabyte motherboard is not available in usa (but im staying in india so i might get it) its looks like a good overclocking board and the asus one is not good for overclocking but looks like some one got audio input working on it and is a good one (REGARDING OVERCLOCKING IM NOT PLANNING TO GET ANY NEW COOLING SYSTEM.....I WILL STAY WITH THE FAN THAT THERE IN THE PROCESSOOR BOX ...... MY QUESTION IS THIS BOARD SUFFICIENT FOR THAT MUCH) and the last one look like it is a good board .... but the problem is i have never heard of the asrock name......so im thinking of the quality..... can any one post the xbench score for the above motherboards??? consolation
I'm running a flavour of the asus board you are looking at. It works flawlessly for me and all the ports/sound etc work as advertised. It's fine for OC'ing as you can set the bus/memory/PCI speeds independently so no problems there. I've been running a mild OC on stock cooling for months without any issues. consolation
With the ASUS boards the -V means it uses the 945G chipset = onboard video (otherwise the 945P chipset is used). -M means mATX. -SE = 2 ram slots and no raid. -1394 has built in firewire. So a -V is the same as -VM but is a full size board = 1 extra PCIeX1 and 1 extra PCI slot. -VM 1394 same as before but has FW, -V SE = SE but without onboard video etc etc I found all the flavours very stable and an excellent platform for OSx86, sound works fine (in/out, mic, spdif ->4 speaker surround, headphone -> full 6.1 being worked on right now by others)... I recommended this board to a couple of friends & we had 100% success with -V, -VM SE, -1394 versions. Two caveats 1) NX is disabled by default, you need to turn it on in BIOS to boot os X (odd decision by ASUS there) 2) quirky boot device order selection; you set up the CD/Floppy/HD on one screen, and the order of HDs gets set up on another BIOS screen. All easily spotted if you RTFM. A bonus is the fact that you can load up your own boot up pic into bios ;-) AFAIK re: the DH board (Digital Home, LOL), it claims to have "Support for Intel Viiv™ Technology" which is largely meaningless as it's just a minimum spec thing for marketing... I think it just has intel matrix raid etc... stuff that you will have to turn off in os X anyhow. I put os on a gigabyte board as well, but it was a different model then the one you are looking at... mdg
I have the P5L-VM 1394. This board overclocks well. I have a C2D E6400 (2.13 Ghz) running at 2.75 with zero problems. Can probably go higher, but I Like the 38 C temp so I'm good with 2.75 I bought a $10 Ethernet card because the onboard Ethernet is a no go. On the flipside, you get built in firewire. It also has ALC883, which is nice, but I won't go in to it here. One thing I don't like about the Asrock, which I also have, is the 20 Pin vs 24 Pin PSU connector. Call me picky, but that's that. Also, you can get about 25% OC on the Asrock board...max. Both above boards work just fine, but I am way to bias towards the Asus...the board just runs great! I've had this system turned on for 1.5 months straight now and no problems. In fact, with all the patches out there, and a replacement Ethernet, I'm hard pressed to find something that doesn't work. The Asus Board is driving my 46" 1080p Samsung LCD, has FrontRow on it, and is basically the epicenter of my HT DVD Playback off of a Saphire X1600 Pro 512 Mb PCIe, is 1080p, and simply looks stunning! The low temps make this PC silent. In fact it's quieter than my 8300HD DVR and the external 750 Gb Serial ATA drive I have attached to it All powered by Seasonic...whisper quiet Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37736-help-needed-which-motherboard/#findComment-271890 Share on other sites
mx-5
Great info on the P5L-VM 1394. I strongly considered this board, but I'm currently leaning towards buying the Asrock Conroe945G-DVI. The P5L-VM 1394 appealed to me because it has firewire, and I have my trust in Asus after having owned a few Asus boards. Reviews have been positive, and NIC is a minor ($10) issue. However, I'm leaning towards the Asrock for the following reasons: 1. I want to use 945G graphics to ensure OSX compatibility. I also want to use DVI with my LCD. My AMD Nvidia 6150 motherboard has DVI onboard, but choices for Intel-based motherboards are low. In fact, the Asrock is the only one I've run across. Yes, I can buy a ADD2 card, but that's an extra $20 card which Asrock bundles. 2. 20-pin vs. 24-pin. Sure, I thought of getting an Antec Solo and Seasonic S12, but that's another $170. I currently have an Antec Aria case with a 20-pin ATX power supply which I wouldn't mind reusing with this mATX motherboard. Asus manual says a 20-pin can be used, the Aria power supply has enough amp on the +12V even though 300W falls short of the 350W they want. Conroe + onboard video isn't going to need >300W. I might be wrong because the 20-pin might mean it's inferior technology, but in some ways, I feel I'm safer to get that than using a 20-pin to 24-pin adapter. Firewire will likely be useful in the future, but not for the next year. I can add that for $20 in the future. I think Asrock owners had trouble overclocking at first, but some have reported success at ~350fsb through certain bios settings. And the Asrock has a wide community here with answers to things I might run into. I've changed my mind a couple of times already, so who knows, I might go back to the Asus P5L-VM 1394...
