Hi,

my system (P4 3.4 Asus P5LD2 2GB ram SATAII) is working fine with 10.4.7. I have my Logic Pro 7.2.3, a lot of audio plugs, Motu Firewire and Emagic hardware working without problems. I would like to update to 10.4.8 because I found here that someone got the UAD-1 PCI DSP card working in his system and I would like to give it a try. May you give me a few hint about the best way to update to 10.4.8 trying to keep safe and working all my environment (I would like to avoid if possible a fresh install) ? Is it a better way to avoid a newest kernel or what?

Thanks

BT

You could upgrade to the newest kernel (beta9 - found on IRC) by the methods described on this forum. Then apply the JaS 10.4.8 combo update.

Alternately you could back up your kexts and upgrade from a new installation DVD.

Your choice.

I updated from 10.4.8 with the old kernel to the new kernel, but this method will work for a 10.4.7 old kernel to 10.4.8 new kernel update as well. I have the same mobo as you, but am running a 805D proc.

I used the following method to upgrade from 10.4.8 with the old kernel to 10.4.8 with the new kernel -

1. First I downloaded the Parsys live update - can be found here http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=33039 (do not run it yet!)

2. I downloaded two kexts the AppleSMBIOS.kext and then the IOATAFamily.kext to my desktop - You can find the dowload link from the Paulicat method page

http://paulicat.freeflux.net/blog/archive/...rade-guide.html

Then I followed the Paulicat method - listed below

Open terminal - type the following -

3A: sudo -s

3B: mkdir /backup

3C: cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/* /backup

Step 3D only needs to be done if you have a 915 based mobo

3D: cp -R /System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework /backup - (I did both, just to be sure.)

Leave Terminal open as you will need it again shortly.

4: Run Apple 10.4.8 Combo update - DO NOT REBOOT WHEN IT COMPLETES

Wait until combo update completes - DO NOT REBOOT WHEN IT COMPLETES

you can find the combo update here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/mac...pdateintel.html

5: Now that combo update is finished, I typed the following command -

5A: Back to Terminal type mv /mach_kernel /mach_kernel.unpatched - (Not sure if I had to move it or not but I did it anyway, I think the live update might do this step for you)

Then I ran the parsys live update - this installs the Semthex v9 kernel which is for sse2/sse3

Steps 6,7,8 only need to be done if you use GMA (900 or 950) based video. (I did not do these steps)

6: Run this in Terminal: cp -R /backup/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext /System/Library/Extensions

7: Steps 7A to 7C to be done only if you have a 915 based mobo ( I didn't have to do this either)

7A: rm -fr /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMA950.kext

7B: rm -fr /System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework

7C: cp -R /backup/OpenGL.framework /System/Library/Frameworks

8: Step 8A only to be done if you have a 950 based mobo

8A: rm -fr /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntel915.kext

9: Copy the AppleSMBIOS.kext to /System/Library/Extensions. (I simply dragged them from my desktop and into the extensions file - and authenticated)

10: Copy this IOATAFamily.kext to /System/Library/Extensions. You might be able to skip this step if you have and ICH7 or ICH8 based motherboard chipset. Trial and error wink_anim.gif ( I did this step just to be sure)

11: Repair permissions with Disk Utility.

12: Rebooted, it came up, shut down again and then rebooted again and whalla - was working!
