Prepare for the hack of a lifetime...

For this, you need two macs & Leopard 9A321.

In turn, you will get Leopard booting ONCE with ZFS as the boot partition. After the first restart, you will be completely screwed with no access to your data and a non-bootable system ready for you to re-install.

Computer1: Install Leopard using HFS+

Computer2: Insert Leopard DVD and Format to ZFS

Computer2: Reboot and put into Target Disk Mode

Computer1: Insert Leopard DVD and insert Firewire Cable between the two macs.

Computer1: Open terminal and mount your ZFS partition to /Volumes/testtest (the default name for ZFS Partitions)

Computer1: Open /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg

Computer1: Open terminal and enter "bless --device disk2s2 --setBoot && umount /Volumes/testtest"

Computer2: Disconnect the firewire cable and turn off.

Computer2: Turn back on holding Option at Start Up, choose testtest.

Congrats, you can now "use" Leopard on a ZFS partition for a VERY limited time.

You can not open Disk Utility, connect to your .Mac iDisk or open your System Preferences' Time Machine tab. Doing so will result in a Kernel Panic.

Also, do not restart. You will not be able to get back into Leopard.

If you attempt to mount the drive under Computer1 under Target Disk Mode, Computer1 will Kernel Panic.

You will need to reformat with your Leopard DVD on Computer2 before you can actually use it again.

This is just a proof of concept test and serves no practical purpose at the moment. In the big scheme of things, just wait one week and we should be getting a new release at MacWorld on the 9th.

Was unaware that anyone else actually got Leopard booting from ZFS. I had heard about getting Leopard running with a secondary hard disk running ZFS or having ZFS DMGs mounted.

Who did it and where is some info on it? I would love to see if there is some way to improve this so that one can actually use it for more than one boot before spending another hour and a half to reinstall.

But then again, we are still just one week out until a new build will be released that will hopefully address all of these issues.

Hey guys,

I just heard today that Apple has found a way to make ZFS bootable. They will use the same solution that Linux use from many many years, the boot partition. They can create a small partition invisible to the Finder, put in that some primary stuffs (bootloader, kernel, boot params etc.) and then use this partition to boot up the system. This partition provides after to locate the real system and give it the control of the bootstrap process.

This is what I heard from an italian guy that installed Leopard on his MacBook on ZFS and found this new partition in the GPT table.

just a quick question, demonoid doesn't usually have leopard, so where can i get the new version?

i hope the newest version fixes problems

Look at ResXhacker's sig. Click on PantheraPardus Releases. It goes to a page. Then click on NineEhThreeTwoOne. It downloads a torrent file. Open it into a torrent downloading app. Then download. Mount, and install.
