WiFi connectivitity worse in Mac OS x86 than in Windows - why?

Hi all. I am using the Netgear WPN511 PCMCIA card which is working fine in Windows AND Mac OS x86 (10.4.8) on ground and second level of this house here. On third level I can only connect in Windows. Both, iStumbler (latest version) and Apple's AirPort network module, find the WLAN (iStumbler gives me a signal strenght of appr. 17), but when I try to connect via AirPort the message is "Error, try again or cancel". I don't move neither myself nor the Laptop an inch, boot Windows, and can connect. Once I move one level lower I can again also connect in Mac OS.

So it looks like a kext/ driver problem to me. Are there WLAN related kext known to offer better connectivity than others :D ?

Thanks,

I would assume it has to do with the MacOS driver being unable to correctly handle the power management of the card, I know we had some issues with pcmcia power management in different os'es with evdo cards when we were beta testing linux and mac os drivers(i work for verizon)

hm really? I cannot see what power management has to do with connectivity at all .. B)

It may just be that the Mac OS is just not as good at recieving wireless signals. I know this sounds wierd, but my macbook pro does not pickup signals as well as my inspiron that is running windows. It is very frustrating that my $2500 laptop seems inferior to my $1000 laptop in this area. :(

MrBazz:

I have to disagree, my girlfriends black MacBook can pick up wireless signals from a full block away (AND connect!) through MANY walls AND wireless phones and other interference on my college campus. In the EXACT same location, NOBODY on my floor can get their PC's to connect, or even DISCOVER the signal. And it's not just in ONE place, it's all over the floor... I have to say that her wireless card, or her OS, is MUCH better at picking up signals than the wireless cards in my buddies' and my machines, or our OSes. It'll be interesting to get back and see how I do in those places with my PC hardware running the Mac OS.

I do have to complain, however, that in Win Vista, my wireless card is running fine, with good speeds. In OS X, I get common slowdowns, no idea why though.

The only fix I have found so far is to use DeskBrowse as my web browser.

my experience is that with a mb 1st gen under windows I can connect to networks that under osx can't, also, another mb (c2d) can't even see those networks. lately due to temporary lacks of connectivity to internet in my home, i'm forced to use the mb with windows to connect to a neighbours network. :)

I think this is just the way OSX manages wireless networks and I hope they fix this for leopard
