Mebster
I'm new to the mac world and to help me get into it (and help decide if I want a macbook) I bought an old iMac G3 450Mhz 512MB. It's a bit slow more or less ok to work on. I reciently went onto a youtube site and notices the playback was extremly slow to the point where it's pointless watching it. Please note i'm on 8MB broadband and so connection isn't a problem. Even if i let the the video fully load the problem is still there. The G3 is as old as my friends PC (which is slow) and even that plays youtube videos fine on 256MB memory. I've read on a few sites that the problem is to do with G3 in general and that possibly nothing can be done. http://www.macaddict.com/forums/topic/90806 http://www.macaddict.com/forums/topic/89126 But on a few other sites i've read people stating that they have no or ver little problems with playback. Has anyone come across this and has any tips to possibly overcome it. Thanks for any help. Mebster
Well I wouldn't use Ubuntu on a PPC Mac. I have used it on a G3 iMac and it pretty much sucked. I would try gentoo linux, its a much harder install and it will take longer but its faster because all the software is compiled from source. ps. You will need to fallow the guide on gentoo's site to install it, its not a typical linux distro. I'm sorry but i'm not sure what this has to do with my problem. What browser do you use AcePlayer? Safari is always slower on youtube for me. Try useing firefox. This should be an obvious test to carry out by for some odd reason I haven't. Thanks for reminding me. Although from what I remember people on the sites I visited stated problems with Firefox too. I'll report back when I’ve tested. And thanks for your replies. :censored2: Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/36845-imac-g3-youtube-others-playback-problem/#findComment-263726 Share on other sites

asap18
Yes you most likely wont be able to watch movies or heavy animations at all without opengl acceleration. What version of OS X are you running? I recommend maybe dropping down to 10.2 and you might get better playback if you're in tiger now. Mebster
i have that too on my imac g3, that's because the lack of QE/CI support had a feeling that might be the reason but I don't understand how my friends 6 year old pc (and my old 7 year old one that's now dead) was able to play youtube videos smoothly. BTW it also doesn't play the quicktime "i'm a mac, i'm a pc" well. Also the old 2 pcs both played divx files easily. The mac doesn't very well. Not even with VLC. Yes you most likely wont be able to watch movies or heavy animations at all without opengl acceleration. What version of OS X are you running? I recommend maybe dropping down to 10.2 and you might get better playback if you're in tiger now. I'm at 10.4.8. I had to use a "4 CD OS X" version which installed to 10.4.0. I don't know if I can get hold of 10.2 but 10.3 had no change. Any other ideas anyone? Mebster
I'm still having this problem and was wondering if anyone might have found a solution? I've learned WMV files seem to play fine with Flip4Mac plugin installed. But no Youtube, Online Quicktime Videos, DivX,... U.C.
Before I got Titan/Natit I had the same problem in my Hackintosh. Its the lack of QE/CI that causes this. Is there anything that can be done to improve it? I really don't get how if macs are supposed to be so great how a 8 year old pc is able to handle all of this but not a 6 year old mac.
