Ok so i can build a pc in 10 minutes and it bores me so i got my first mac...13.3 macbook core duo, 60 gb hdd, superdrive. Now my question is i keep downloading all these dmg files and i open them and then it leaves a link on my desktop. How do i get these to install to the hard drive so i can just leave an icon in the dock and reduce all this clutter on my desktop? Also do i have to keep the dmg file to make the program work? Thanks

The DMG is a disk image. When you double-click the DMG, it mounts the disk image to make a virtual disk. The app and any associated files are inside the virtual disk.

What you want to drag is the app inside the virtual disk, not the virtual disk itself. However, if there are lots of contents of the virtual disk that you also want to keep in a folder, then go ahead and drag the virtual disk to make a folder. To force it to copy the virtual disk and make a folder, hold down the Option key before you drop it.

try reading this, it has some pictures to help explain too:

also, welcome to the community and congrats on the mac! hope you enjoy it as much as i enjoy mine.

are you using ichat or did you download the aim client? if you're not using ichat, i'd recommend using it.

the aim client is still only a ppc program, meaning that it hasn't been recompiled for the new intel chips and has to run through rosetta. that might be why it would crash so much.

if you'd like to find another client to use, i'd recommend adium: http://adiumx.com/

Adium

Adium is a free instant messaging application for Mac OS X, released under the GNU GPL and developed by the Adium team. With Adium, you can connect to any number of messaging accounts on any combination of supported messaging services and then chat with other people using those services.

Supported services

AOL Instant Messenger (Including ICQ and .Mac)

Jabber (Including Google Talk)

MSN Messenger

Yahoo! Messenger (Including Yahoo! Japan)

Bonjour (Compatible with iChat)

Gadu-Gadu

Novell Groupwise

Lotus Sametime

Notable Features:

OTR Encryption

Tabbed Messaging

File Transfer

Webkit Message Display

i don't use irc, so i'll let someone with a little more experience take care of that request.

thanks for being so responsive, quick, and friedly with replies. definately something unheard of in pc forums. now i just need to figure out why aim crashes so much... anyone have recommendations for a good aim/irc program?

For IRC, I use X-Chat aqua, ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/xchataqua/ ) and for AIM/MSN I use Audium (See the last post for the Link) Its much better than AIM and iChat IMO

I agree with vin, I like to use colloquy for IRC.

For aim I use iChat, in my opinion nothing beats it.

and then for MSN, I go straight to the source, I use Windows Live Messenger AKA the new msn. Which is availible at http://www.microsoft.com/mac
