What is the best way to upgrade from Jas 10.4.8 old Kernel to the new Semthex Kernel? I have a stable OLD 10.4.8 running with lot of critical apps and info on it right now, so a clean install is not an option. I have read all the info at http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=34871, but none of them a 10.4.8 to 10.4.8 NEW upgrade. The reason I am considering the upgrade is really surrounding security concerns/problems with the previous versions of the kernel -

What is the best way to upgrade 10.4.8 to 10.4.8 NEW, and How would I go about doing it?

What are you talking about??? Everything on that page has to do with "new" 10.4.8 and the "new" kernel.

Some use a DVD to install directly. Others, like Paulicat and Pastebin start with a lower version of OSX and walk you through upgrading it to 10.4.8 and the new kernel.

You have 10.4.8 but don't have ANY of the 10.4.8 kexts installed. To do that you need to use the Apple Combo update. Read the Paulicat method for example.

Old kernel = 8.4.1

New kernel = 8.8.1

Wasn't sure if the actual 10.4.7 old to 10.4.8 old impacted the ability to upgrade to 10.4 8 new using that method, since most of the examples given talk about 10.4.7 old to 10.4.8 new upgrade. I'll start the upgrade tonight and see what happens!

Mark

1. Freshly installed JaS 10.4.7.

2. Applied JaS 10.4.8 SEE2 Combo Update patch and reboot.

3. Copied AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleAPIC.kext, IOACPIFamily.kext and IOAudioFamily.kext to desktop.

4. Applied JaS SSE2 Beta9 patch to 10.4.8 SSE2 working installation

5. Before reboot, deleted r2d2, AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleAPIC.kext, IOACPIFamily.kext and IOAudioFamily.kext

6. Moved AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleAPIC.kext, IOACPIFamily.kext and IOAudioFamily.kext back to Extensions folder

7. Copied Exp6 kernel (ex. mach_kernel.s6) to root and set permission

(sudo chown root:wheel mach_kernel.s6

sudo chmod 644 mach_kernel.s6)

8. Repaired disk permissions and prebinding things

9. Reboot with mach_kernel.s6

The above is what I did, I guess you can start from 3.
