MIDI Server Not Working

EDIT: Turns out it is a permissions messup. See post #12 for the fix!

 

I'm having no luck with MIDI. I'm running 10.4.8 (AMDTEST1) on a Opteron/nForce4 system. 6channel audio worked out of the box but if I go to the Audio/MIDI Setup program, it gives me an error, "Unable to launch MIDI server". I tried installing the drivers for my M-Audio Ozone (and hooking it up), but no dice (the extra audio ports DO show up). I've attached a screen capture.

 

 

This pretty much excludes one of the most important activities I use my computer for: Music Production.

Does anyone have any insight as to why the MIDI server won't work?

 

 

My All-girl Noise-rock group is almost ready to start recording, so any quick tip would be most helpful!

strange, even though I don't have audio output with my Sigmatel when I open that tab it doesn't give me that error, I can even add devices without a problem.

I think i'm experiencing the same problem that you have as well. I have the M-audio Ozone as my MIDI controller & audio in/output , but somehow when I go to Audio setup/Midi setup, Midi setup won't be able to recognize my Ozone.

The audio is working, I tried itune to playback and it has sound come out from the speaker.

when I tried any other musical software, the midi is not working. when i tried add Ozone as the midi device, it doesn't even have that ozone as the option.

 

Anybody is kind enough to tell us where the problem is?? I spent a whole night figuring out the problem. NO Luck!!

Just to help clarify- I'm throwing in an additional screen capture. When I click on the MIDI tab, it sits there trying to load for a few moments, and then this message pops up:

I do have the same problem. I tried to reinstall my Ozone completely, without success. Then, i reinstalled my MacOS system and the newest Ozone driver. Still not working.

 

Anyone can help on this?

Sometimes the MIDI server will launch and sometimes it won't. I was able to get it to create a crash log.

Same problem here. Sometimes midi works, sometimes not. I remember with another kernel, I never got this problem. But could be happened by accident. This kernel didn't play audio properly.

Since my original post, not much has changed. I've done a reinstall and upgraded to 10.4.9, but the problem remains. Has anyone else experienced any progress?

The same problem here with MOTU 828mkII. Sometimes MIDI server starts, sometimes not. I have this issue even if the interface is unpluggt.

Ok, things are fixed!

 

Goto your audio folder @ /Library/Audio/

 

Get info on the Audio folder

 

Change the permissions to full read/write for everyone and every group

 

Apply the changes to all folders inside

 

Cross fingers...

 

And then it works! Reason, Logic, everything. I am able to fully use my midi controller and 24/96 audio interface!

 

Sometimes it has to be repeated after restarting before midi can work.
