I am trying to get MacOS running on a Dell Optiplex 7080 SFF with  i5-10500 16GB RAM 256GB NVME

Tried several different EFI folders I found on github which were fore different model Optiplex 7080s with no real luck.

Not reall fussed about which version of MacOS the EFI is for, I will just make an installer for whatever it needs.

Catalina or later are all fine with me.

Can anyone help with a working EFI for the 7080 SFF please?

Hi, you can put Sequoia it is an efi that can work perfectly.

https://github.com/jerryhan77/dell-optiplex-7080mff-opencore

You can change the SMBIOS to a larger version if it doesn't work for you.

Please try the link that Leo Mauti shared above first. I worked on my version in parallel and uploaded it without noticing that someone had already done so before me. The files in the link look good.

I tried the EFI from   https://github.com/jerryhan77/dell-optiplex-7080mff-opencore on a fresh Catalina installer yesterday a few hours before I started this thread, and it wouldn't boot into the installer, the progress bar under the Apple logo got to about 70% then the machine shutdown. I presumed either the mff model had substantial differences to the sff or the Catalina wasn't modern enough for the EFI. Will definitely be looking at it again when I get back from my weekly grocery shopping in a couple of hours.

Spakk what is the reason for "Enable Legacy Option ROMs" in your post?

I don't really understand what that option does. I always have had tt disabled in my tests.

The "Enable Legacy Option ROMs" option ensures that older firmware modules from PCIe and onboard devices are loaded during boot.

This allows macOS on the Hackintosh to reliably recognize the hardware, such as USB ports, networking, or other PCIe devices. Without this setting, some devices might malfunction or not work at all.

Edit:

In this video, you can see exactly which BIOS settings the user configured. Follow the settings shown, they are fully sufficient to set up your system correctly. The creator is even charging money for the download, but the information in the video is more than enough.

I can't seem, to find the option on the 7080 SFF it's got the 9/9/2025 BIOS 1.36.0 perhaps they removed it. It's certainly on my 9020 SFF.

I tried that on Catallina and Sonoma installers and it paniced.

Should I download a Sequoia installer and try that instead?

What was the panic

Not sure because that EFI turns off the verbose boot so you only see the apple logo and progress bar.

It just froze at about the 40% mark, of trying to load the installer. USB power goes out for mouse and keyboard, and the USB stick led stops flashing.

How can I turn verbose boot back on, and get it to make the panic log file like some other EFIs do? Comman +v after the startup sound doesn't work.

Ok The story so far.

I tried the EFI from the link Leo Mauti shared above with Catalina, Sonoma, and Sequoia USB installers, none of them would boot into the installer couldn't enable verbose mode so no record of the point they crashed.

I also tried the EFI shared by spakk above and it wouldn't boor into Catalina or Sonoma installers, don't try Sequoia.

Just for fun I tried the EFI from a Sonoma installer I used for an Optiplex 9020 sff i5 and put it onto the Sequoia USB installer and it worked, it booted into the Sequoia installer, and I successfully managed to install Sequoia in the 7080 sff internal M.2 drive.

During the install process there were several reboots required, the computer didn't reboot, it sat there with a message about AppleSMC and  after a minute or so, it simply powered off. I restarted and it continued with the install as normal.

When completed,  I dragged the EFI off the USB onto the internal EFI, updated it to Opencore 1.06, generated a new serial and rebooted which didn't want to work so once again a power cycle.

The computer identified itself as a iMac Pro 1.1 (2017)

Ethernet is fine.

The background is white no desktop wallpaper will show, also doesn't feel accelerated by the UHD 630.

No sound device is detected.

Youtube videos seem to play fine otherwise.

Shutdown and Reboot don't work properly.

Haven't tried energy saver and sleep yet.

It wants to update itself to Tahoe which I wont try.yet.

I tried to upload a copy of the EFI which worked on the Sequoia installer, but they .zip is 14.6MB and the forum wont let me upload over 10MB.

There is a dirty great kext which I am not sure I need.

Here is a screen shot of the kext sizes.

I have attached the config.plist too because I was kind of hoping that someone might point me in the direction to fix the things that are not working.

config.plist 52.5 kB · 1 download

The limited upload capacity for new users on insaneleymac.com isn’t ideal. However, there are several free file-sharing services that let you upload and share data temporarily, no registration required. You can simply paste the generated link here.

One site I often use is starto.de. It’s in German, but you can switch the language in your browser.

Steps:
1. Click the blue “Get Started” button twice (top left area).
2. Confirm with “Accept.”
3. Click “Add data.”

Upload your previously compressed EFI folder (ZIP file), then paste the generated link here.

Link: https://www.strato.de/cloud-speicher/hidrive-share/

Edit:

It would be very helpful if you could upload the entire packed EFI folder. This would greatly simplify the process, as several corrections are required.

The current OptiPlex 9020 EFI is based on a Haswell CPU, while your Dell OptiPlex 7080 SFF with an i5-10500 (UHD 630) uses a Comet Lake CPU.

These platforms differ significantly, so the kext drivers, graphics configuration, audio setup, and other system components need to be properly adjusted for the Comet Lake architecture.

However, I did the EFI with Opencore Simply, and it worked fine, in my 3050.

I haven't heard of that before I will give it a try.

Is there anyway to use that program without having to install Windows first?

I have never tried to install Python on windows.

Yes, you can install Wine using Homebrew. It can be a bit tricky at first, but it works flawlessly for me. This way, you can run the Windows version of the tool directly on macOS without having to install a full Windows system.
