terrordemon
ive been wondering, what is the performance of osx on an x86 machine? does it suffer? if so, can anyone tell me what it suffers from? (if its specific stuff) basically what im wondering is how will osx work. does it work like its supposed to? or does it have a lot of problems when running it? logimaster
Wow!! Itunes 7 running!! The only glitch is "About This Mac" crashes...Downloading Jas 10.4.7 Update..(to replace the loginwindow.app) I hope this works..any comments?? I'm downloading the 10.4.8 Combo Update from Apple, gonna try and get the OpenGL framework working... I'll be doing more test on a few systems..I'll definitely post the results with complete configurations.. Cheers!! p/s: oops! wrong forum location... terrordemon
the questions might have been misinterpreted... basically if i install osx, using it will i have problems? hardware problems aside, are there any software problems? also, i read on the wiki that for 10.4.6 opteron 170 i need to use SSE2 even though its SSE3? does anyone know any more info about this? zbob
ive been wondering, what is the performance of osx on an x86 machine? does it suffer? if so, can anyone tell me what it suffers from? (if its specific stuff) basically what im wondering is how will osx work. does it work like its supposed to? or does it have a lot of problems when running it? Good question. Well, performance of the basic OS is good, but there are problems: - Very limited hardware support - Even hardware that can run (iow. works, but is not the same used in modern Apple machines) is suboptimal (like certain graphics features not working) - Power managament has been suboptimal (standy/hibernation not 100%, fans running at full speed, batteries draining more quickly than when using XP) Bottom line is that this is for those few lucky enough to have their hardware supported and the enthusiasts who don't care if wifi, bluetooth and external monitors etc. don't work. Basically it is not for "production" and until Apple open sources the whole thing, it is likely to remain that way. For hackers it is great fun, so if you're more into getting things to run than actually running it, this is a perfect choice. The more integration is written for OSX to Linux or BSD drivers (or even XP binary drivers), the more hardware will work under OSX. To me, the biggest things are seeing a proper OS on my ultra-portable and showing it off to friends, but I do actually use it too, though the lack of drivers forces me to reboot into XP way too often. -- zb Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35887-whats-the-performance-like/#findComment-255446 Share on other sites
Prasys
Well if its on a laptop you might have some problems with power management [thats why i had to remove my OSX installation from my AMD lappie]. Other then that its pretty solid , you could have the basic OS. Its pretty good , but again......you need to work on things. Some stuff might work , others dont Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35887-whats-the-performance-like/#findComment-255490 Share on other sites
consolation
Regarding performance; a Pentium D 2.8 (820) performs about as well as Dual Core G5 2.0. Which means that for sub US$500 you can have the equivalent of a G5 2.0 dual + a modern video card. Which means a lot, since the intel version of mac OpenGL drivers performs much better then the PPC flavour. mifki
and for the sse2 thing it has no effect whatsoever on performance Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35887-whats-the-performance-like/#findComment-255513 Share on other sites
