sdancer75
Short story. My old High Sierra works just fine with NVidia 9800Gtx on SSD1. Trying to upgrade to Catalina I had no acceleration with NVidia Card. So, installed a fresh copy of Catalina on SSD2 and I Installed and AMD HD7850 (https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/R7850-1GD5OC/Specification) video card. The result? None of them can boot, it shows a black screen whatever I tried. When I connect my monitor thru HDMI the monitor stays in Green but black screen, when I connect thru DVI the monitor goes to standby (orange led). The ONLY way to run both OS is re-install my NVidia Card. I tried almost anything that I know using Clover 5119, ie agdpmod=pikera, -x, nv_disable=1, inject ATI. I tried also an older version of clover, the same. Whatevergreen+Lilu are installed inside the Clover. My MotherBoard is pretty old Asus P5KPL-AM SE LGA775 with quad core Intel CPU. I can not think anything else. I read that Catalina to enable the AMD video cards, need CPUs that support SSE4.2 (mine is SSE4.1) and for that reason I should use the MouSSE kext emulator (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mp3-1-others-sse-4-2-emulation-to-enable-amd-metal-driver.2206682/). Maybe this is true, but High Sierra should run without problems, am I correct? Clover/Graphics detected my card as "Card Device=6819, Model=AMD Radeon HD 7850" Using my High Sierra installation on SSD1 (APFS format) I can not get into safe mode because the IOATAFAMILY.KEXT is disabled and I can not see the SSD, as a result I get the prohibition sign Can someone help? If I buy a used a supported Nvidia GTX710 will work with Catalina or even BigSur? Slice
Yes, AMD HD7xxx after High Sierra requires MouSSE else black screen. GTX710 will be supported up to Monterey. 1 Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/356731-black-screen-can-not-boot-after-replacing-nvidia-with-amd-hd7850/#findComment-2804713 Share on other sites

I already have installed MouSSE under /Library/Extensions but I still get black screen. I suspect that my 7850 is incompatible with High Sierra or Catalina. Slice
Compatible but not with Core2Duo. MouSSE is not open source so we can't check it or improve. sdancer75
This is my GPU Bios Rom. I connect my monitors with HDMI and DVI. Looking at the ROM description below, I can see that the 1st connector is the DisplayPort. Does this mean that the output is going thru DP and because of this, I always get the black screen to my HDMI or DVI connectors? If yes, is there any way to change this?
