hi,

the people at macrumors have discussed this niggle at-length (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macpro-5-1-high-capacity-hard-drives.1971809/)

some have found you can tape the PWDIS pin (#3) on the SATA connector, others like myself have not found any success.

has anyone here experienced this issue with their setup? some people think its a software issue, others think its due to the Mac Pro 5,1's "legacy" power supply.

i just found it weird that this new WD GOLD 4TB drive won't appear after a warm reboot. i have an older 4TB seagate 5400RPM that doesn't have this problem.

i thought maybe you guys have seen this issue and possibly have a script that can delay reboots so that certain drives get enough time to report (if that's the issue)

Drives which implement the 3.3V Power Disable feature should not even show up on cold boot, since they plainly do not spin up if supplied 3.3V on pin 3. HGST, where the WD Gold line originates, is known to strictly implement this feature per the SATA specification.

As an alternative to tape or varnish on pin 3, a solution is to power the drive from an old-style 4-pin Molex power connector through an adaptor to the new style 15-pin connector: There is no 3.3V supply from the 4-pin Molex.
