munky
So i'm currently running my MBP with one 512Mb stick and one 1Gb stick for a total of 1.5Gb RAM. I'd like to know if switching to two 1Gb sticks would make much difference. Obviously more RAM is better, but im specifically interested in how much difference dual-channel RAM mode makes. If there's anyone out there with a 1.83Ghz Core Duo MBP (128Mb VRAM version) running a matched pair of memory, can you please post your geekbench scores here? For reference, my 1.83 w/ 1.5Gb RAM (not a matched pair, obviously) gets 150-151. Many thanks! alloutmacstoday
Yeah, i kave a mb 1.83, and i have 1 1gb and i'm gonna add another gb, switching to dual channel is much better and faster. i mean the difference is pretty minor, but things run faster and it's just better, so i would switch Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35118-calling-all-mbp-183ghz-owners-dual-channel-ram/#findComment-249688 Share on other sites
consolation
On friends MBP we got about a 5% boost comparing 2X512 w/ 1X1024 using ram with same latencies. Using 1X512 & 1X1024 the benchies were about 15% higher then 2X512MB. Hope that helps. munky
so he went from dual-channel to not dual-channel and his benches still went up? i guess it wont make THAT much difference then. just my mbp seems sluggish somtimes, compared to my old macbook (which had 2x1Gb sticks). boo50
sure better to have dual channel RAM, if you compare 2*512 with 1*1gb. but always much ram will give more perfomance! Try to go to store.apple.com and configure new iMac or MBP. both have option to put in 3 gb of memory, 2 sticks = 1gb + 2 gb. so if apple sell thier products with TOP not dual-channel config, i think there is not much difference... munky
but it doesnt explain why my MBP 1.83Ghz CD seems slower than my MB 1.83Ghz CD - the machines are virtually identical in terms of CPU. the difference was that MB had 2x1Gb RAM, and the MBP has 1x1Gb and 1x512Mb. so is the big difference the 512Mb? or the dual-channel? sandmanfvrga
I would say the dual channel. Seeing as the sticks are not the same size, you can't use dual channel and thus you have 1.5 gigs ram, but in single channel mode. asap18
i found that when i switched from 1.25 gig to 2z1 gig the os became much stabler and other problems went away on my macbook. mrks
i found that when i switched from 1.25 gig to 2z1 gig the os became much stabler and other problems went away on my macbook. Your situation is slightly different. All the mac's with intel graphics require dual channel ram. Unlike the models with X1600 video chips, which can work without paired ram. munky
closure on this topic - i upgraded to 2Gb ram and my geekbench jumped by 10 points to 160.0 it also feels much faster, so i recommend any intel mac portable owner to run matched pair ram, preferably 2Gb Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35118-calling-all-mbp-183ghz-owners-dual-channel-ram/#findComment-292000 Share on other sites
Slip
I'd be interest to know your CINEBENCH 9.5 score ? Munky Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35118-calling-all-mbp-183ghz-owners-dual-channel-ram/#findComment-292015 Share on other sites
munky
Right. CPU Benchmark - Rendering (1 CPU) == 283, Multiple CPU == 528, Multiprocessor speedup : 1.87 Graphics Benchmark - C4D Shading - 326 CB, OpenGL SW = 1244, OpenGL HW = 2328, OpenGL speedup: 7.14x There doesnt seem to be a 'final' single figure score, unless i'm missing something. Does that address what you were looking for?
