mdg
I was thinking about having one hard disk (Raptor) for the main HD, apps, etc., and then having a second HUGE HD (750 Gb) act as the drive for my user home folder (Documents, Pitures, Movies, Music, etc.). I've seen stuff here/there posted on the internet, and it is conflicting. I wanted to see if anyone here has done it? Has anyone successfully moved their user or home folder to second HD? Thanks, /mdg. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34617-has-anyone-ever-moved-their-home-or-users-folder-to-another-hard-disk/ Share on other sites

mdg
Brilliant! Thanks! I found 2 out of those 4 while Googling, but also found others. It seems as though for some people it works 100% for others, they have problems. Rammjet
In general, I still have my home directory in the original location, but I put all of my apps and docs on another partition. iTunes and others can be pointed to use a folder on another partition in Prefs. I don't move the Apple apps because Software Update won't find them, but all other apps are on the separate partition. morwyn
I found the second link that Rammjet gave you awhile back and tried it out. It works great. Every so often it won't login automatically (I guess it booted too fast and didn't find the drive yet), but I manually login and it works fine. No real problems here. Just be warned... if your hard drive with your home directory fails, you won't be able to get into OS X... but that is what backups are for, right? ;-) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34617-has-anyone-ever-moved-their-home-or-users-folder-to-another-hard-disk/#findComment-246601 Share on other sites
tomtefar
Maybe you should follow this also to be able to log in if you de-connect your Data-drive: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?sto...050215110210846 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34617-has-anyone-ever-moved-their-home-or-users-folder-to-another-hard-disk/#findComment-253025 Share on other sites
TheND
I've got an external 250gb for my movies, music, pix, etc. And an Apps folder of course, but the apps are still installed on the OS X harddrive. I might have to re-install OS X and the apps, but at least I don't have to go hunting for them!
