os_overload
I realize that JaS has released his new DVD for 10.4.8, but I don't want to reinstall. I also know there are other topics similar to this one, but I want to specifically address a full update and most of the others didn't compare JaS and Kiko. I downloaded the old 10.4.8 JaS and Kiko updates and would like someone to clarify for me the differences since I was having trouble. Also, both of these releases were made a while ago and didn't include rosetta or others, nor did it have the new fixed kernel. It may or may not have had r2d2 (decryptor) So what I want is a way to update and get everything including the new 8.8.1 kernel + rosetta, decrypts (r2d2?), and maybe even the new system drivers if they work. Is there a way to do that now or should I wait for a final JaS (or someone else) update. Links to compiled versions of the new kernel would be nice as well, if needed. Edit: Checking the packages with pacifist reveals that both kiko and jas have r2d2 but kiko has a lot more apps in his update and also a second package for gma900 support. I don't think either has rosetta or other encrypted binaries like that, though. and also they don't include the new drivers which might work now... or not? edit2: for sure neither has rosetta. I read somewhere else that you should just install the update from apple and then the fixed kernel and smbios.kext or something like that. Can any1 elaborate? I read somewhere else that you should just install the update from apple and then the fixed kernel and smbios.kext or something like that. Can any1 elaborate? These were what I did- - Install 10.4.7 afresh - Update to 10.4.8 using kiko RC2 package. - Update to 10.4.8 using JaS update (nothing wrong with kiko update, I use this because I found that my games did not work after update, so i tried JaS update on top to see if the games would work - it did not. A re-install of the games would work, the exception was Quake 4, due to OpenGL problem). - The Apple Official Update were Installed using Pacifist - Downloaded Mifki Kernel (search this forum and you should find the link to the kernel and SMBIOS kext) - Replaced the kernel and the kext. - Repaired permissions - Reboot with -x option (this is required as Apple update "updates" a few files that required GUI to be running). - After no activity on the hard disk, reboot - now you are with new kernel and new OpenGL (Quake 4 work again). Also AHCI work Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/32812-upgrading-to-1048-from-1047-or-other/#findComment-231459 Share on other sites
os_overload
Ok, after searching the forum again, I found a recent post describing an upgrade. I installed the update directly from apple, and I backed up IOATAFamily.kext, and I found applesmbios.kext (from this forum? can't remember). First I tried rebooting and it failed after loading the drivers when I used semthex's kernel. Daemon's kernel caused an instant reboot after choosing the volume to boot. So, I had to go in under linux and replace the system files IOATAFamily.kext and AppleSMBios.kext (even though I think the latter was unecessary since it was crashing on loading an scsi driver). I rebooted and got a kextd error about diskarb, rebooted again, got some errrors but it let me login. I found the about this mac box caused no crash (due to applesmbios replacement?) and applied the Colonels patch to fix my system info. Rebooted normally and everything works, including rosetta. One problem: it seems to take longer to get to the graphical login screen now, possibly due to errors behind the scenes. Doe
Well you could try putting in the "Jas OS X 10.4.7" ISO and once you get to select destination screen choose utilities and terminal. Once you've done that type: /Volume/name of your disk/usr/sbin/installer -pkg /Volume/Mac USB Stick With 'JaS OS X 10.4.8.pkg' on it/ -target /Volume/name of your disk Should work .
